This was briefly mentioned in the Apps for iPhone / iPod Touch thread but thought it deserved a thread of it's own, as it may go un-noticed there.

I had a HTC Desire for a brief time and while I didn't like the OS, I absolutely loved the alternate keyboards like Swype and SlideIt.

And while Apple have a stipulation in their development agreements against these third party keyboards as a primary input (so we're never really likely never to see it on AppStore, unless these T&C's change), that didn't stop Andrew Liu submitting Swype (although he had to rename is iSwipe due to the fact the well-established developers of Swype had nothing to do with it).

    To get it on Cydia:
    • Launch Cydia from Springboard
    • Tap Manage-> Sources-> Edit-> Add and enter the following repo: http://wynd.x10.mx/repo
    • Tap on Add Source.
    • Return to Cydia and search for iSwipe. Once found click on Install button.

While it's not perfect just yet, it's definitely getting there. Video of it in action:

Gave it a go. That thing with the space you see in the video is a bug. It doesn't insert spaces properly and removes ones you add manually. So for now it's unusable. It also slows down typing and causes lots of errors when using keyboard as normal, so I needed to uninstall it.

Swype and Slideit on HTC Desire is awesome. But this imp
Ementation has a long way to go. I'll certainly keep an eye on it over the next few months. Current version seems to be 030.

I originally posted about this in the iPod apps thread. I've been using it for the last few days and it isn't great. It has a very early beta feel about it, certainly it isn't a patch on the android version at the moment. It has several glitches that render it quite annoying to use. I hope they will be fixed in upcoming updates.

In the meantime there's an alternative that could be handy for boards enthusiasts or those of us who email and write long posts regularly on an idevice. Its an app called ShapeWriter. It is another swiping keyboard. Unfortunately its contained within its own app so you have to write things there and then copy and paste what you've typed into where you need it. Its not nearly as annoying as it sounds however as the keyboard and its text predictions are quite excellent, and it really saves you time as you type infinitely faster on it . It is every bit as good as swype on android.

The app had been available in the app store but was pulled last year so now it is only available to jail broken idevices through means we can't discuss here. The apk can also be found for download online so it can be installed manually if you have the cydia app [EDIT].

Hope i dont get into trouble for saying that! I'm hoping the fact that its no longer commercially available gets around the piracy issue. Apologies to the mods if I should have kept it to myself!:)

I find the more I use it, the more I'm getting used to it.

It's not perfect, but it's definitely faster than using the standard keyboard (IMO anyways).

It’s also open-source so it can only improve with time.

Did you install it via Cydia? It should have restarted your springboard.

Now go into anywhere where's there's a keyboard (compose message / e-mail etc) and drag your finger across keys. If it's installs correctly, it should leave a blue line for the path of your fingers.
