My other half's polo had tracking done in March when I swapped the rear tyres to the front, I noticed the other day the tyres were bald to the steel wire on the inside of each front tyre, I had a spin in the car and when I turn right the steering wont straighten itself !!! So obv the tracking is out toe in/out I looked at the track rod ends and the dont look bent is there any thing else that needs to be fixed before I get the front wheels re-aligned/tracked ???

Check for suspension wear, and if ok make sure you get a full 4 wheel laser alignment done. They'll only be able to adjust the front end but it should be done with knowledge of the overall alignment.

Had a similar thing with my old Volvo S40 and it ended up being a worn bushing on the front wishbone.

Same here, wishbone bushing was the culprit causing uneven wear

You will need two more tyres before you get the tracking done, pointless getting tracking done and putting old tyres on again / or putting new tyres on and not getting tracking done, watch the pot-holes!!

    Which model polo is it?

The MK3(6N) models have front camber adjustment and very few places bother to set this up as its a bit fiddely.

The Mk4 polo is very prone to pothole/impact damage to the hub which can lead to incorrect camber too and its not adjustable on those.

He needs to be sure the problem is fixed, so if tracking/camber is the issue grand, but they need to check for the worn bushings etc. Any decent place will find them when tracking - imho.

Just stating the obvious here, worn down to the steel is really dangerous for driving,.

Don't bother getting them to check it at all unless they have the correct 4 wheel alignment equipment. If they only have manual guages then the fitter will be very unlikely to be able to check the camber properly.

Many places will also tell you that your car doesn't have front camber because either they couldn't be arsed with the hassle of adjusting it or they simply don't know its adjustable.
