Hi could someone share some light on the following:

During an interview when the interviewer asks about have you applied for other jobs (when answered yes/no: then asked to please elaborate with whom etc??) and have you had any other interviews?

What is the best approach to this question?

If you are comfortable sharing that information with the interviewer, then I see no reason why you shouldn't elaborate. I don't see it as a big secret to list some of the other companies you have applied for (keep the examples to a minimum though - you don't want to tell them you've gone for 50+ interviews with a 100% rejection rate).

Also, it will show them that you are actively exploring all opportunites and will not settle for any old job offered. It may give you a competitive advantage as they will view you as a candidate that they may lose if they don't act fast (assuming you have displayed competency and suitablity in all other aspects of the interview).

I only ever ask this question when I'm interested in a candidate and am considering them for the role. If they are at an advanced stage interview with another company then I know I have to get an offer out quickly if I'm going to progress them.

So take it as a good sign.

Same here, I would not ask otherwise.

I have been asked that question in two interviews and was offered both jobs. However I would never tell a company the other co's that I'm interviewing with...just say that you are interviewing around and looking at your options.

tell them that is irrelevant tbh.

I would always answer yes and am at advanced stage with company x but explain why the current company is my preference.

that was what I answered to my last interview - but unfortunately I rejected me today!!!:(:(:(

If a candidate gave me that responce in an interview I would consider disqualifying them from the process. That is a saucy responce, and very bad advice to be shelling out to people. I don't see any advanatge of not telling the interviewer this information.

Can you explain to me why you think this is an appropriate responce?

    Thanks for the responses,

I was caught a bit off-guard by the question but answered yes but just named the sectors I was looking into without mentioning company names. Thought it may have been a trick question, thanks again.

the interview is purely based on what happens on the day.. the company seen the candidates cv and want to interview him/her for a role they think him/her is suited to

any other interviews or non-interviews the candidate did have absolutely sfa to do with this interview.

tbh, if they got asking about other interviews it clearly means they are wasting time and have other things in mind and want to see someone else.

if they want you, they could not care less about other interviews.

the exception maybe if they say at the end " we are dead keen on you here, can you tell me if you have had other interviews or offers that we should be aware of"

now, that is a fine remark and could easily be handled with .

if they go splurting it in the middle of an interview its usually bad news and you may as well take a walk.
