Options for getting rid of 12 year old car?

    Hi all,

I've a 1999 Hyundai Coupe that is currently out of NCT (failed in February, will cost €500 or so to get it up to scratch), though taxed until January. I drive very little and know it's practically worthless at this stage so have planned to get rid of it when the insurance runs out in August.

What options do I have? It actually drives fine and the engine seems in decent nick (I drive from Dublin to Galway about once a month, in addition to driving a few miles each week in the city), would it be worth any €€€ and who would buy a car without an NCT?

If I don't pursue selling it, how do you go about getting rid of an old car? I presume I need to pay someone to junk it? Given that the tax on it (think it was approx €450 for the year) is good until January, can I claim any of this back and is there much paperwork involved?

Thanks for any advice offered :)

i gave my hacked suzuki away last month. No tax, no NCT although it did run. Put it on in donedeal and someone will take it. Also, check scrapyards. the price of metal is high and you might get a bit of cash for it!

What is the actual fault to stop it passing the NCT?

I hope you are not driving this thing around.

And I hope you remember that the OP's question was about how to get rid of the car;)

Scrapped a 98 Almera recently and got €80 for it, would've been more but they have to dispose of the tyres.

Check local breakers (one's that will issue a end-of-life cert) but tbh if it's running then put in on adverts and let someone buy it for 50-200 euro and use as a spare or fixherup.

I'll probably do this and see how it goes - it is running fine as stated (though I'm very wary of driving a car without NCT) so someone who is happy to go through the trouble of fixing it up might get a bargain.

What's the deal with letting a prospective buyer test-drive a car - do they need their own insurance, yeah? I think my insurance doesn't cover other drivers... Feck it, for €200 it might just be worth bringing it to the scrapyard instead of dealing with insurance liability!

Test drive it? what you see is what you get, bring a trailer as its no NCT

No harm in a gentle reminder to the OP that driving a car with an NCT 6 months out of date that needs €500 thrown at it is not wise. Surely boards.ie shouldn't be discouraging such comments ;)

Maybe the 500 can be reduced and it will be good for another 5 years?

Would be a great help if we knew what was wrong with it

I honestly can't remember the details perfectly - the emissions for sure (though I failed 1st time 2 1/2 years ago as well and sorted that out with the ol 'drive up the M50 in 2nd gear for 30 minutes before the test'!), a hard-to-reach light (fixed that one) and wheel bearings maybe? The last thing would cost €250 to fix anyhow, I remember that from getting the quote! I don't really need the car anymore you see, so don't want to spend €500 fixing something that just sits around... although it is great having a car for quick spins, etc...!

You've gotten your point across and been asked politely to leave it. It stops now as it is completely unrelated to the OP's question. Back seat modding and ignoring on thread instructions are against the charter and you know that very well.

What on thread instruction did I ignore?

Let's just leave it there shall we?

Any more discussion on this will lead no where good, and only serves to take this thread further off-topic.

    Danke.

    But it's taxed?!

Hi, you should get anywhere in the region of 100 to 150 €uro for scrapping the car!

Send it for an NCT and put €100 in the ashtray, then pocket the remaining 400.
