And it could have been even cheaper if you'd gone somewhere else.

Theres a clothes shop in cork thats had a closing down sale on for the past 10 years :D

Yeh, you just pay a fee to get them fitted

You can even arrange it through eiretyres

Really do they come out and fit them

In fairness i'll buy Irish where I can, but I won't buy a non Irish Product where some guy has just jacked up the price to make a few bob.

A kick in the hole was needed and I'm fairly sure it was given, you can bargain most tyre places down a good bit and they still make a fortune on them!

Needed 4 tires for a new set of BBS wheels for my car.. 215/40 17.. Atlas wanted 150ea for Waneli's and some other Chinese brand.. Another place in Leixlip(cant remember name) wanted about 130ea..

Eiretyres 67ea delivered.. Federal SS595's.. local place beside will charge about 50 to fit them..

I'm sorry but that is a massive difference for the sake of 'Keeping it Irish'

12 quid a tyre brings them to 80 euro fitted, my cousin just got 17 inch federals for a Bmw for 85 a tyre IIRC, fitted and balanced.

You'll still be paying an Irish fitter - you're just not getting shafted for a dodgy set of Nankangs.
I'll pay for quality, I don't care where it comes from. If I can get it online for the same price as the local guy charges for crap its a no-brainer.

Fair play to him... But places i tried didnt have them.. Including the other garage that didnt call me back.. So anyway ill still have them fitted and balanced for around 80 a corner so happy days!!!

There's a reason why they sell tyres themselves! I'd feel embarrassed going into a tyre fitters with four tyres that I got elsewhere.

    Why would you feel embarrassed?

If a tyre fitter trys to sell me a Wanli,Sunny or Hifly or the same price as i could get a Hankook,Falken or Federal off camskill and fitted for 10-20 euro tops surely its a no brainer?

I'd be more embarrassed running into some poor sod because the tyres couldn't deal with the water/greasy on the road.

I got a hole in the side wall of a tyre last week, bought a replacement off camskill and got it fitted by my tyre fitter for 15 quid. He was saying he has stock there, Semperit, hankook and Firestone that are 12months old and he can't shift.

People coming in for budgets all the time. Its ridiculous.

the tyre place will be getting the tyres from another country so a certain amount of what you pay them will go out of the country anyway.

the only difference being the money will be in your pocket instead of their pocket.

i usually get my tryes online and get a local guy to fit them. he cant match the price i get them for. usually work's out at over 100euro cheaper for me to get them online and thats after i pay him to fit them. granted he only gets them in the local motorfactors and they have to get their cut too

Tyre fitters don't try to sell you anything, they sell you what's cheap because that's what 80% of the Irish want.

When I go in and ask for a wide tyre of a specific brand and they tell me they will need to order it (ie Import it), takes them 3 days and they take the Camskill price and uplift the price by 20% for their bother I really have a hard time having sympathy for the business.

The majority of people dont order tyres online, they buy whatever cheap stuff the Tyre places have. The few car enthusiasts with specific needs are not the Tyre resellers market by a long shot, worrying bout Irish sales is OTT in this case.

http://www.tyreland.ie is the place to get tyres in dublin lads. They sell second hand tyres that are nearly new. Im not affiliated with them but i did save a few quid on two 17 inch tyres for my bmw

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,563 ✭✭✭leeroybrown

If a tyre fitter can sell/order me good quality tyres for not much more than the online prices then I'm quite happy to pay the small few extra quid that it'll cost me to save the hassle. Otherwise I'll buy them myself and get them fitted.

I always buy tyres on camskill, quality and price is the key for me.

If Irish distributors cut their margins and stopped selling nankangs and chinese crap i'd gladly buy off them.

Why pay 100+ euro for a generic standard use cheap-o tyre off the local (generic)fit center, when you can buy far superior top marque tyres that are suitable for your driving style and for your car for equal or less money?

Cash is king im afraid, in the end of the day you have to look out for number one.

What?! I saved about 40 quid by buying 2 Tyres online. If it was 4 I would of saved 80 snots. Pleanty of places out there fitting Tyres that the customer supplies nowadays.

I wish I could afford to get embarrassed about things like that

Pah, Good Year F1s, here, €1300. Camskill, €900. No thanks!

I can't thank your posts multiple times unfortunately. I agree wholeheartedly, I too would be mortified asking a chap to fit tyres I had gotten offline.

If I ever did I'd be inclined to insist they took €100 off me to fit and balance four of them, if that meant it was not worth getting them online I can't see how I'd be bothered.

But there's a finder on the camskill site showing places that fit them, these places advertise that they will fit Tyres that they don't supply. What's to be embarrassed about getting a service in a garage that they advertise they do?

I got my Tyres delivered to the place that fitted mine and there was no problem at all.

^^^ Each to their own and all that, I'd sooner support local business than British ones.

    +1.

I was pricing tyres online today and my preferred choice bought online works out at 60 per corner cheaper than the best price I got here. Fitting won't be a huge amount so I'm looking at close on €200 saving. I'm all for supporting local business but if the price differential is that much no sane person could resist buying online.

In saying that I'm going to call a few more places tomorrow and possibly try the existing places with the new quotes to see if they'd go closer but it's a big gap to bridge.

Very true, in case like Voodoo's when the difference is €400 I'd go with the online folks but would throw €100 to the crowd who fitted them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

I actually managed to get €40 off, think its normally €60 for fitting. One of my customers worked there so said to drop his name. I got a good deal, no regrets.

I'd just pay them what they ask with the usual tip for the lad that does the work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

It goes for everything which probably isn't a motors topic, if you don't buy local and then you're local business goes out of business and your stuck some day for something that they supply and make little margin on,(repairing a flat etc.) then you've only yourself to blame. I know we were ripped off in the good times but I find everywhere is willing to barter and as above I'd rather spend it here irrelevant to prices across the water.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

I'd buy Irish at any opportunity no doubt, it it meant saving 10% buying from the UK i'd still buy Irish, goes for anything. When you're in retail you understand how important it is to keep your prices as low as possible and you also need to understand that in many cases Irish shops can never offer the same prices as a UK equivalent. You just have to hope your customers prefer to be able to drive 5-10mins down the road and get the job done all in one place.

But if it means saving a packet buying from abroad, its a no brainer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

On the dearer stuff maybe, I can't say that if it was savin 500+ quid I wouldn't buy across the water, but for smaller money it's worth buying here, what goes around comes around and all that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Absolutely, my parents both got a new set of tyres in the last month for a Fiesta and a Laguna, didn't even bother to look online. Straight into town and got the job done, nice sets of Pirellis too. No point waiting around and having to pay for fitting to save a couple of quid.

Got Pirelli runflats a few months ago... only worked out €20 for the two of them dearer to get them in my local tyre place compared to getting them online and bringing them to the same lads to get them fitted.
I was too busy to work from home or take time off work so I didn't mind spending the extra €20. Also, the tyres are guaranteed by the local tyre place. That's important.
