Need some help - Mint

    Hi folks,

I run Mint on an old laptop which Windows just stopped working on.

My usual Laptop (Win7) is out of commission at the moment, so I'm using the Mint one for about three weeks.

I have a Zune Player, which I use for Podcasts and Music, but seeing as it's a MS Product, I have no way to update my podcasts using Mint - or do I?

I've heard of software called WINE which allows Windows Specific software to run on Linux. The Zune uses it's own software for all that kind of stuff, it's not drag and drop.

I need a step by step guide to getting this to work, if anyone has the time and/or inclination to help me, please.

    Cheers

You dont need to use WINE, you can use a program like Amarok if you set it up to use MTP. MTP is Media Transfer Protocol and it is the protocol used by players like the Zune to transfer media such as playlists and songs.

I dont have a step by step guide, but if you google Zune and Amarok, you should find a howto.

If you install guayadeque it should recognise the Zune out of the box as an MTP device.

I've also been recommended Songbird and Banshee.

Do I need to use the terminal to install guayadeque?

I don't know how to do that.

If you go to the download site it'll offer you a .deb file. The default tool offered after you download it should do the install work for you.

Ok...what I think you want at this point is an application called gdebi. It should do the dependency resolution for you.

Since you want to avoid the command line:

    system->administration->synaptic package manager

    search for gdebi

    install gdebi-core and gdebi

Once that's done do alt+f2 and run gdebi-gtk

file->open then browse to your .deb file. It should sort dependency resolution (AFAIK).

Avoid the command line by typing it in a smaller box? :P

If it's the latest Mint edition guayadeque should be in the software centre, otherwise just copy and paste three lines in the terminal.
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:anonbeat/guayadeque

    sudo apt-get update

    sudo apt-get install guayadeque-svn

...but how do I make it see the Zune?

When I plug the Zune in with the USB Cable I can see it when I click into computer, but I can't browse it.

You should have a podcasts tab - if not, enable it from the View menu.
Right click to add a new channel and the podcasts should appear in the window on the right. Double-click (I think) to download the podcast you want (you can set this to auto download whenever it's updated). When you right click a downloaded file you get an option to copy to. The Zune should be listed.

On another note, if you prefer you should be able to switch the Zune from MTP to a mass storage device so you can just read/write to it like a USB stick:
