Driveway options

Our house is now 4 years old but we've never gotten round to doing our 270square metre driveway which is in 804 at the moment. 4 years ago, I was being quoted €3,500 for tarmacadam which we couldn't afford at the time. We looked for quotes last year thinking with the down turn, it might have gotten cheaper but we were quoted over the €4,000 mark.

Since then, I've heard stories that you can't drive heavy vehicles onto tar in case they leave groove marks. We have oil trucks, wood pellet trucks and a septic tank waste removal tractor/trailer on the 804 at various points of the year. Will tar stand up to their weight or should I look at getting something else put down like concrete (the imprinted type)?.

The 804 is starting to make the house look tatty at this stage and no matter how often I spray weedkiller, they keep sprouting up through it.

hey there, tar should b at least 60mill for the weight thats going on it,40mill just for cars, also the 804 should b rolled with a heavey roller first ,drains for the water and if u want trow down some teram to stop weeds but they should b no need for that.as for the trucks and tractor its not great they on the tarmac but once they just reverse up in a straight line u will have no issuses it when they start turning thats when they break up the tar but all lorry drivers are cute enough just to reverse up

Thats the problem. Our driveway is curved and the trucks have to reverse around the curve to get to the oil storage tank, the wood pellet storage bin and to reach the septic tank:(.

You still will be ok as I say its when they start locking hard and turning like a mad man thats when the tar starts to break up, but if the 804 is rolled right and the tar put down right you will have no bother, as for the imprinted concrete after a few years the colour starts to fade and then it looks bad, i'd stick with tar as when it done right it shows off the house lovely, i'm back up in Cellbridge Thursday, Friday if you need some help to know what to do i can have a look at it for you.

    LOL.......that's a lot of trucks !

I've just had my driveway done after 4 years......and it's heaven. At 3500 a few years ago you should have taken his hand off -that sounds cheap. Very cheap. I just had 180m2 done for €6400.

Machine-laid, and well-rolled, it's very good, and I've brought our own truck home a few times with no issues.

If they can reverse your curve without locking or scrubbing wheels, you'll be fine.

I think you've paid well over the odds for that. You see, I got 3 quotes back in 2007 and they ranged from €3,300 - €4,000. The recent quote was €4,000 which I thought would be lower due to the recession and all that. Btw, these quotes were from reputable, established and recommended companies, not the Travelling fraternity.
