It depends on the person, it varies! Some people can learn after 3-4 lessons, the average would be after maybe 10-12 lessons saying that I say 20, 36 or 40 lessons be about right. It all depends on your lessons with your professional instructor and how much practise you put in, in between. It depends how quick you learn to be honest really, things might click straight away or maybe not. Everyone is different, learn at your own pace don't rush it take your time, it will come naturally and come second nature after a while.

I think for any new learner drivers out there, spend the time on learning the basics before getting lessons at all or at least practise them as much as you can as everything else will fall into place more easily. Important features are the pedals, gear box, hand brake and steering after that is what you'd be learning for general driving and so on. Getting the basics right is the first step to being confident with other aspects of driving.

Its important to get the gear changing right, practise it before even getting the car started same applies with getting your feet to correlate with the pedals such as getting to biting point slowly lifting the foot off the clutch and where the clutch and accelerator meet. You have an idea if your foot gets uncomfortable on the clutch and there is a give as if you are about to lift it off the clutch but don't until you have got into suitable gear and gas going (when car is turned on but you can do this even if car isn't on just do like the car is on even though its not!), the stopping and braking is very important too, its imperative to get clutch and brake control spot on with out conking out!

I have heard some countries 120 hours of lessons would be required but don't think it be as high as that here! Say under 65 lessons be about right since we don't have any major interstate highways!

Most people I know had between 5-10. The majority of people I know of had less than ten. I never knew anyone to have more than that. It's all about practice though.

I did maybe 6 or 7 in total, including pre-tests. Around 3 of them were last year, with the 4 this year. I only really learnt how to drive properly this year (last year I was driving around a housing estate only).

But I agree, what matters more is the time you get out in the car.

Woah, that would be alot of money! I've done 8 lessons, along with alot of practise. Judging by what my friends say, somewhere between 5-10 is average. I'm going for it in 2 weeks :D

I had about 30 lessons which is pretty high, but I never had any private practice as I didn't have access to a car.

I had about 35 lessons, but many of them were paying for an accompanying driver, not being still living at home with my parents I used to find it difficult to have access to a licence holder to come with me when it suited.

To be honest, towards the end I just drove on my own - and yes, I know that was illegal, but unless you get practice in, you won't make any progress.

I think 30 is a must if you dont have any family or close friend with license to drive with you few times a week. I've had about 25 already and after I will book driving test I will have 2 or 3 more with instructor just to correct what I do wrong.

I've had 12 or 13 so far, and I don't really feel like I need that much more really. Which is strange since I started at absolute zero (unless you count Need for Speed games, which you really shouldn't :D )

I had 2 lessons before I was able to drive properly but one of my parents would bring me down most night to an industrial estate for me to practice. This really helped alot when i was learning to drive

I was about 30 when I learned to drive. I had 6 lessons a few yrs previous and then none for a few yrs then I think I had about 30 lessons before I passed my test. I failed the first test, waited about a yr for the next one, passed the 2nd test. I was so nervous. I had a lot of lessons before I bought a car. Think I let the car sit outside the house for a few days admiring it before I had the balls to drive it. Actually met a woman in her 40s the other week who doesn't drive. What a handicap.
I haven't met anyone who admitted to having more lessons than me but I'm sure they are out there. I'd be surprised if it's the norm to have that many though, never mind 65.

Had in excess of 40 over past few years only really cos I had intermittent access to a car, started going out on own (i have the odd hr or two with a full driver as well, but have had to bite bullet as I was getting nowhere on an hr or two a week) around estate and Phoenix Park etc...Its the only way to do it, now I'm getting 6-7 hrs plus a week compared to one with an instructor, I have no doubt the lessons will pay off though....They wont be wasted but impossible to get better on one hour a week...

N.B. Still havent passed it yet but only just started getting out in car on my own

I had 5 I think, I drove away myself after my third lesson, back in the days before accompanied licenced driver for about a year and passed the test.

I Learnt to drive a coach in 20 x 1hr lessons and sat the test and passed 1st time -- it all depends on the trainee and the instructor and listening is the big part and learning from mistakes and that you dont do them again
