Right, I'm thinking about getting an oldish estate in a few months time. Used to driving a Polo hatchback, but I'd like to make the change to something I could transport some music gear in and also kip in the back of reasonably comfortably from time to time if needs be. Low budget: 1,500 - 2,500 EUR - I suppose the most important things are reliability and economy. Seems to be a few Mondeos and V40s about online and I'd like the idea of getting one or the other, but I've heard mixed things about Volvos and I'm very open to hearing about better options!

    Thanks in advance!

The Mondeo estates have a very useful loading space

Friends dad has one, (03' I think) we managed to fit a 4'x3' shed - which had two pieces measuring 4x6 straight in without having to put it at an angle

We couldn't even do that with a friends pre 03'shape VW Caddy, had to have the the doors half open and held with bungee cords

At that kind of money make & model don't count for too much - it's all about the actual car.

Here's a bit of a rarity, an eleven year old one owner Passat: http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=201118202242111

I wouldn't be surprised if that was a very good car.

I'll be selling a BMW 520i touring for that kind of money in a month or two... Car has a full BMW service history and is extremely reliable. Very good load lugger

Believe it or not I was looking at that Passat alright earlier in the week on donedeal I think, also saw what looked like a seriously good deal for an Octavia alright a few days ago, shame I won't be in a position to buy for a few weeks yet anyways.

Thanks for the input everyone. :)

V40 is not a very big estate. Avoid the 1.8i models (mitsubishi GDI engine) especially if there is a noticeable tapping/ticking noise, normal 1.8 with volvo engine should be fine. Know someone with an S40 did over 250k miles without any outlandish faults, despite having a hard life.

Mondeo is a massive estate as already mentioned. Someone else was on here looking for a cheap estate recently - I suggested a Focus estate (1.4 will be slow but should be cheap as chips and is fairly common, approx same size as V40). Roverjames suggested a 1.7 DTi Astra (cheap, economical, real workhorse engine from what I've heard, not as common as the focus tho).
