Honda Accord timing chain

    Hi
I am looking for some advice.

I was driving along the motorway coming out of Dublin the other night, cruise control on,car doing 70mph,all of a sudden the car cut out,i had to swerve from the outside lane onto the hard shoulder(lucky nothing was around me).

i tried to restart the car and nothing,it wouldnt turn over all i could hear was what seemed like relays trying to latch,i got the car towed home and got it into a garage on Sat morning,it was plugged into diagnostic machine and came up with 2 faults, one was a crank shaft sensor,i forget the other fault.
The mechanic told me that in all probability the Timing chain had either slipped or stretched,is it possible for it to slip or stretch and if so what is required to fix it,i presume the chain must be replaced for a stretch(if such a thing can happen).

what am i looking at in terms of labour costs,i have googled for further info but nothing seems to exist in terms of issues for Honda Accord timing chains,it seems unusual to me,hence my request for help here.

some important info i forgot, the Accord is the 2003 Model(newer).2.0 Petrol
    Thank you

Having gone to Honda and got a diagnostic done,i was told indeed the Chain had stretched, they quoted me 2,500-3,500 Euro because it was likely that 2 of the injectors would have to be replaced in their experience.

i went to a mechanic i know and asked if he could do it,yes,he ordered the chain and had it the following day,it was then i got a call to come into the garage.I went down ,he showed me the engine,2 wrecked cams, scored and scratched ,they had shifted sideways and re-embedded themselves in,what to do now?
The advise was to get a second hand engine as the cost of 2 Cams would be more expensive.

Engine was ordered,i then decided that i would go the whole hogg,so engine went in,new clutch, new waterpump,i asked for the new chain to also be put in(was i mad?).

all done, car running good, strong smell of oils etc. coming from engine(no leaks) is this just spillages burning off?

I have one more question,i opened the boot on the car yesterday and found a semi-circular black plate with rim and 3 attachement holes,it looks like some kind of shield,i presume it was taken off during the work any idea where its from?

    Rgds

You were certainly wise to fit the new chain etc. The labour would be tiny with the engine on the bench anyway.

I just had a Motorcheck vehicle inspection carried out on my 2005 2.2 Diesel Accord.
Apparently there is excessive noise from the timing chain. There is 135k miles on the clock. It has been service regularly at a Honda Garage and used the correct 0w-30 oil. I cannot hear any rattling.

Is it worth getting the chain replaced?

How much have people paid to get their chain replaced?
I have got a quote for €1050 which seems reasonable as I have read online injectors in some cases need to be changed during this task!

How could there be excessive rattling if you can't hear it? Is it at idle or under revs?

I have an 06 accord and can't hear any rattling but now you have me wondering!!

Trained ear etc. He had the inspection carried out and the mechanic could hear it.

Timing chain on.Micks garage is 100 bucks. What's the other 900 for? Does engine have to come out?

    ........

Some people can filter out noises like nothing else

and/or long screwdriver up against suspect area, other end to your ear

    and/ or a "mechanics" stethoscope

(if you listen really carefully with one of these you can hear the e50 notes leaving the car owners account ......)

I think it is mostly for labour. It is a 6-7 hour job even for a mechanic which has done it before.

I had a car with a chain before with huge miles on the clock and could hear it rattling when the engine was cold. With the Accord I cannot hear it.

Has anyone who got the timing chain changed before heard noticeable rattling from the engine?

I have read a few places online where the injectors may have to be replaced when the timing chain is replaced.

Does anyone have any info on this? Do garages just do this if they damage the injectors whilst replacing the chain ?

Would you let it go until you hear a noticeable rattle?

    Was the rattle at idle?

Im thinking to let it go until a noticeable rattle is audible alright.
The mechanic said he noticed it when the car was driven into the garage initially.

You might get another 20k before it gets too bad.

Forgive my naiviety but if you have your Accord serviced regularly and at a honda garage isn't it a life time warranty on timing belt?

There is a chance that the injectors won't seal properly after.
We did a big number of Honda timing chains and so far we managed to re-use the old injectors without any issues.

    Yes it should.
I have serviced it at 12,500 miles as per guide and used the correct 0w-30 oil.

There is another chain on the injector pump, two chain tensioners,a few chain guides, sprockets etc.
Usually the chain stretches due to the faulty tensioner.

There is a 7 year/ 125k warranty on the chain.

Im out of those warranty limits.
Could a tensioner be replaced or would the damage have been doen to the chain at this stage?
