Ffs I dont mind one or 2 and a few trailors but tonight was really taking the piss:mad:

Anyone else think ads should be banned before movies?

Nope. Cause then we'd have to pay a tenner extra to see a film.

The ads themselves don't piss me off, its the fact that half my popcorn is gone by the time the film starts :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,979 ✭✭✭Tea_Bag

wanna pay twice as much for an adless movie? why don't you just show up 10min late like everyone else?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,864 ✭✭✭Daegerty

Soon they'll ban people coming in when the ads are almost over

Just head in 10/15 mins after the stated start time.

Normally thats what id do but when all you can get is a general ticket then you must get in early to get a seat

If i had waited till the ads were over then my neck would be in bits from looking up:mad:

Always found it weird the way the whole place laughs at a 'funny' ad even though everyone there has probably seen the ad dozens of times in their living room barely raising a smirk.

I hate the cinema & avoid it like the plague.

Main reason for the extended ads is that you'll eat all the grub you just bought before the film even starts, second reason is to hope that you'll be roped into a revisit by trailers.

    That's my theory anyway.

Did ya see that ad where the chicken sits on the phone cause yer man puts a picture of eggs on it ? :D

The money made off the extra ads helps too.

Just saw Harry Potter there and while the ads were long what got me was the fact that everyone seemed to chew their popcorn at the exact same moment so every second there was a large crunch & mush noise!

Its what the first 10-12 days of a new release that all ticket proceeds go to the studio? That's how it works in the States anyway. The Cinema's see nothing back from that revenue. They have to make it in food and drink, and ad revenue. Post-release and Matinee screenings however, the cinemas themselves make a nice bit of profit, but of course attendance drops off a cliff after the first 2 weeks. I do remember when Toy Story 1 came out though. The Matinee had it from the day it launched to the day it went to VHS, and then some. That must have made them quite a bit.

I use the adds to get a bit frisky, bit of advice though don't drop the hand after eating salty popcorn!

I am late for everything so 20 minutes of ads suits me down to the ground.

On the other end of the spectrum, there's been people talking of going to the latest Harry Potter movie JUST to see the teaser trailer for the new Batman movie.

i'm of a certain age that remembers short movies before the main feature......but we didn't mind cause we were easily pleased back then

I think the distributor gets around 75 -85% of ticket sales from the first couple of weeks, when you factor in costs, it does mean nothing for the cinema though. I think the worst offender was Star Wars Episode 1. I think they charged cinemas somewhere north of 90% of ticket revenues for a cinema to show it on opening weekend.

Also if you ever wonder why cinemas show crap films nightly to near empty theatres, blame the distributors as well. "Take this piece of **** and hawk it to death or we won't give you the next big blockbuster".

Basically film distributors have the cinemas by the balls and every high priced box of popcorn and every extra minute of ads you have to sit through are because the cinema has to make money somehow.

I kinda like the ads.... :o

I definitely think the two best ones that were ever in the cinema were the Road Safety Authority "Slow Down Boys" one where the couple are getting it on in the car & it's over in a second & the girl says "Is that it??". I can't find it on youtube but it's unusually funny for a road safety ad.

    And then this one:

The head on the girl doll in it is priceless :D

It's just Toy Story, not Toy Story 1....JAYSIS!

Whatever about Coca Cola adverts etc (stuff people may actually purchase for their visit)
Why the adverts for phones, when A - They do not want us to turn them on during the screening (Which is fine)
and B - They then show that horrific advert with the girl texting some lad from her car, only for the car to be crashed to pieces, then stop, and Bang, another crash!

    Extended cuts aren't always better!

Is the cinema really that difficult to avoid?!

It's not like there could be a cinema hiding behind a bush or around the next corner waiting to jump out at ya! :pac:

I never see any ads, because I arrive on time, not early.

What I mean is, film time is say 9:00 pm. Enter cinema at 9:10 or 9:15. No ads. Simple.

The only benefit to 20 minutes of ads is nearly everybody has eaten their noisy snacks /popcorn and slurped through their drinks so it's quieter when the movie starts:D
