I used www.theknot.com to make ours. It's free to sign up, and once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy to use. I set ours up about a year in advance of the wedding but there wasn't really a whole lot on it until about 9 months out. You can edit it at any time so I'd say you could set it up whenever you like.

TBH, mine was mostly a bit of a piss take, but I did use sections of it for guests who were travelling, like I had directions to the church, to the hotel, and also a list of alternative accommodation in case people didn't want to stay in the hotel where the reception was being held. A lot of my family and friends really enjoyed it, I'd update it regularly enough, and just put random funny bits and pieces on it.

Great for posting info bout accommodation etc. Saves you from having to include this on your invite; just the website address will do.
If you google free wedding website you'll find loads of results. They're all the same really. For some of them you need to sign up to an on-line group but they're always free anyway.

I think it's essential that they are funny or some people will find it very cringey. I'm particularly thinking about the slaggings the poor future husband could get :D People sometimes put up old pics of themselves, dodgy pics of the groomsmen and bridesmaids. If you include funny stories about groomsmen, family, bridal party etc as well as your own tales of romance it'll take the emphasis of the two of you and you'll avoid coming across self-absorbed. Which is easily done when it's your wedding! ;)

Congratulations by the way and best of luck!

I registered our own domain name and setup a Wordpress website using a free wedding site template. I included all details and an rsvp page which emails me when someone fills in the form.

Most people I know are web literate so I emailed them a link to a personalised invitation which links back to the website. Posted a few invitations to people that don't use email.
It has worked very well and saves money and hassle for me and guests.
