I have been using PC at work and college for years. Not so long ago I bought myself an iMac for home use. I still have a lot to learn about Macs, so go easy on me!

On my work PC as part of my job I often take photos, paste them into Paint and then add arrows, text, boxes etc..

What is the best way to do this on my iMac?

    Thanks

You can do it in Preview.

They will remain as vector if you save to PDF which will look infinitely better than anything from Paint.

If you want an app like Paint with brushes etc install GIMP

    Pixelmator is cheap.

    GIMP is free.

    Pixelmator has a better GUI.

    (Now ask "what's a GUI?")

Granted GIMP is has a messy GUI but why pay for something to replace M$ paint?
Unless you work for Pixelmator or something?

That's rather like asking "why pay £2000 for a Transit van when you can get a hand cart for free?" Granted they both transport goods from A to B but the price is a bargain for what you get.

The original question was "What is the best way to do this on my iMac?"
He didn't define "best" so my suggestion is something in between free but ugly GIMP and brilliant but expensive PhotoShop. If he isn't willing to pay a little, I'd expect to see the word "free" in his question. ;)

He's using Paint. M$ Paint you remember that?
    Crayons would be in improvement.

GIMP may be a little cumbersome but it not short on features, if anything it is as powerful as Photoshop.

If you want to use ridiculous analogies GIMP is more like an F1 car. Tricky to drive at first but amazingly powerful.

No but I've only been using Macs since 1987.

So that somehow qualifies you to recommend the OP to waste money on an application to replace a simple paint program that you're not even familiar with?

www.skitch.com Skitch is an absolute gift for that kind of work, it's quick and simple and you can also upload to the web for simple sharing. Highly recommend it.

    GIMP is Gimped.

    Get Photoshop... somehow ;)
    Or Photoshop Elements, I guess.

    another vote for paintbrush.

GIMP is a paint equivalent in the same way as an A380 is a bicycle equivalent.
