Ive noticed all the amateur players are sponsored(by the likes of BOSS etc).I presume theyre being paid for this.So technically theyre not really amateurs are they? My real question is do they get paid any prize money? I mean when Shane Lowery won the Irish Open what happened with the(significant) prize money for 1st. Does the prize money get paid to his sponsors who in turn pass on a lot of it to him or does he walk away without a penny?

The amateurs are not sponsored. They bought those clothes in a shop.

In terms of prize money, they are just taken out of the field and whoever was behind them gets their money etc.

As far as I know they can't do that. They still must wear clothes though.....

This is incorrect, top amateurs are sponsered and recieve clothes, equipment etc as part of that deal, afaik they cannot and must not accept cash as part of of deal, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

AFAIK this is correct. I dont think it is in the Rules of Golf though. Probably in the Decisions book - can anyone confirm? In any case, it has long been the tradition in golf to wear clothes while playing.

Surely they're just given the clothes?

You or me (I am assuming you're not a pro) can win golf clothes in our local weekend comps, I would assume there's nothing wrong with a company giving an amateur clothes.

Clothes with a big BOSS emblazoned on the jumper is a little different to clothes with no logo though.;)Wouldnt you agree. I doubt that these amateurs are purchasing jumpers with big logos on them with their own moola, and then proceeding to do free advertising for said logo in front of millions of viewers:)

I think there was hassle with Tiger when he was an amateur when he was being given equipment when he was in college, I believe the rules are you can be given equipment or expenses, you can't "profit" from the game.

In regards to prizemoney, it goes to the next person in the list, so if your first as an amateur, you get the trophy, 2nd gets the money, if you are 2nd, 3rd gets 2nd money, 4th gets 3rd's money, etc. etc.

You are still learning your trade, almost like an apprenticeship, in the US the amateurs might be in college, in Europe they might be part of the Wentworth academy or something like that.
