What setup would a person need to host a website from home.
    Is this even possible?
Is it just a matter of getting a fixed ip address and a server and a decent connection from an isp.
    Anybody done it already?

It will most likely break the terms of your connection - just to be aware.

Even if it doesn't, there are the hassles of availability and getting a static IP on a consumer grade connection.

Amazon will give a free micro EC2 instance and 10GB of storage to new AWS signups... much better than self hosting.

You can buy shared hosting these days for pence a day.

You could even go to a site that will give you a template to work from and host your site free for a year like weebly.com

hosting at home is dangerous from the point of view of security, as previously stated it is cheap to host remotely these, cloud hosting is best, do a search on the internet for 'cloud virtual servers ireland' or something like that, make sure it is hosted in Ireland for SEO purposes, make sure it is cloud hosting, make sure it is dedicated CPU and dedicated RAM rather than burstable and look for a solution that will allow you to scale your CPU and bandwidth depending on your needs. One more thing, get a fixed ip address for your own office and make sure that you have access to block ports on the firewall and restrict ftp access, RDP and db access to only your office, hope this helps.

What are you looking to host exactly?

If it is to a small spectrum then hosting is well at home but if it is in bulk amount than some of the other specified hosting facilities and terminologies are best suited on a large scale.

Lad, check out online hosting, it costs so little you cold have multiple domain names and you can always cancel if you dont want.

i would recommend Blacknight and Register365 cause thats what i have used.

hosting from home will be a security nightmare especially for other data that you may not want to share and you dont have to worry about licencing either.

I would agree with Blacknight, but could not, in good conscience, recommend Register365.

It's about ten times cheaper to get your website hosted than it is to get a static IP in your home.
