hi folks, i need a bit of advice and opinions here , iam currently in the market and on the look out for a sierra sapphire 2.0glsi efi petrol to use as a weekend dunno if classic is the right term but def rare enough car.

ive been to see 3 so far since friday and am quickly forming the opinion that they dont offer particularly good value for money.

for example i went to see a 1993 2.0i gte yesterday no nct,no tax,4 poor tyres, temp needle went into the red on tick over and he wanted 1500e no less!!! (car is on donedeal )

now i really want a sierra but maybe thetes no good ones left because of them being rwd , welded diffs etc etc, bit im starting to think that maybe a mercedes benz 190e 2.0petrol would be better value????

    any advice and opinions welcome

    thanks

Sierras are actually great cars. They got very popular again at one stage and that unfortunately meant a lot got wrecked which is unfortunate. You have to take a while to look around and find a decent one but there are still some out there. They're very different to a 190e yes both are roughly similar in size and rwd but that's about where it ends. I like the 190e as well but they're not as lively as a sierra and don't drive in the same way as the sierra. the merc is a good cruiser and the sierra is something you can have a bit of fun throwing around once you give it some good sports shocks and springs.

That gte has been for sale on and off for years. I'm sure i even looked at it about 5 years ago myself. It's a pity it's in a bad state as the gtes are very nice, but unfortunaly if i'd known you were going to see that i'd have said leave it as from the ad i can see it's one that needs a lot of sorting out. It does have nice recaro seats but it also has tell tale signs of a tatty abused car, missing speakers and head unit, wrong steering wheel for a GTE, lowered 60mm on cheap and OLD springs (lowering them more than 40 throws the rear camber out loads and kind of wrecks how they drive also), front arches destroyed from having bigger wheels on it before which rubbed the arch lips (they've been put back roughly in shape but you can see that the front left one in the ad looks sharp edged)

There was also another one for sale recently in kilkenny that i remember and the guy was claiming it was an "original gte with 150 bhp" (which they never had), the car was in bits but he claimed it had very low miles etc.

However recently a guy i know sold a white 2.0i gls that was the tidiest one i've seen in years. It wasnt to everyone's taste (big sunstrip and 17 inch white jap looking alloys but the car was very well minded and seriously clean) went for about 2k, so that's at least one example of a very good one that was for sale recently, they do come up.

thanks for the reply conrad, your bang on in what you say about the gte too.your man tried to persuade me the mileage of 23000 was genuine too, even the recaro interior is gone home too to be honest.i was suer the springs were cut twas so low. pity tho because being 93 it would be nice.

Well im pretty sure that's the one i remember and if it is then it has really crappy 15 year old lowering springs. The mileage is not correct. It's easy to just say "yeah it's 23,000" because it only counts up to 99,999 (which is stupid but it is how it is a suppose). But it's obvious from how that car looks that it's either 123,000 or 223,000 but to be honest i'd rather have one with 223,000 that was in half decent condition and never abused than one with a quarter of that mileage but loads of abuse and poor treatment behind it. With a car that old and not really all that valuable the condition of it rather than the mileage is most important as condition is not always dictated by mileage

maybe i should have made it more clear but i have no interest in giving 2,500e to 3000e for cosworth replicas or 1500e for uk registered sierras.
no offence to the owners of these cars but there not for me.

That is why i didnt show you any of the donedeal ones as there arent really any on there right now which are particularly good value. They do come up from time to time though as i said. However you probably will have to go to about 2 grand to get a very nice late 2 litre though.

im supposed to go see a white over black 91 2.o glsi in the morning, only thing is tho is that its a hatchback model, now that doesnt really bother me once the car is clean and tidy, just looking a second opinion on it really i guess

im a ford man myself and my advice would be hold out till the right car comes up for sale....save a few quid more and buy a better one....;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Id say buy a 190E,it's a far better car for your money. You have more chance of buying a good one for reasonable cash. A cheap Sierra will be wrecked, and many of the better ones for sale are imported and have VRT owing.
Having said that i would like a Sierra 2000E.

theres never enough money not in my house anyway.:(
anyway i reckon i was being realistic enough with a budget of 1500e

it seems like its mainly young lads who have the sierras and think there worth more than what they are in reality. maybe a 190 would have a different kind of owner seller.

I had a couple of them, great old things but they only look like a sierra

Front panels, doors, bonet etc the same but there's a big heavy commerical chassis under them. You can fit sierra suspension etc to the front of them though and the 2 litre twin cam engine from the sierras (they came with 1.8td, 2.3d and 2 litre "pinto" OHC engines). Serious diff ratios too though to they're near flat out on the motorway like an oldschool transit is. Great machiens for work though they did a lot for me without problems and handled it as well as many bigger machines would have.

The came with cortina fronts in the early 80s and sierra fronts after 87, all called P100. No diesel option on the cortina ones. They can still be got in fairly good shape for less than £1K in uk which is where i'd suggest you buy one as most here are too expensive for their condition

P100 Cortinas had bigger front wings than standard Cortinas because they had larger wheels.

I just did a calculation for a 1991 2.0GT (closest I could find) and it came in at €560. My feeling from reading the ad is that €1000 or a touch over would buy the car. I don't know much about Sierras, but it looks like potentially a good car at a good price to me?

Lovely looking car, best of luck with it. I had an '89 2.0i SOHC gls myself one time, was mad about it. Fine solid car on the road.

Myself and a friend had a 2.0 injection one of these as a forestry track car a few years back. Hugely entertaining.

you should get the seller to take it off drugdeal or we'll all know the asking price.....but what was the selling price:D

Well wear, I worked in a Ford dealer in the 90s and one of the sales lads nearly cried when he had to give up his demo GTE and get into a MK 1 Mondeo.

so what? nothing wrong with that car, and nothing different to a "normal" spec one that couldn't very easily be changed back.
