Hey all, When i turn on my laptop and use it for about 2-3 minutes it just goes blank, The laptop is still running but i can't see anything on the screen. When i hold down the power button to turn it off and then turn it back on it's grand for another 2-3 mins but just goes again. I'm in safe mode with networking now for at least 15minutes and it's grand. Any ideas??

have you checked in control panel, power settings ? to make sure it's not set to turn off. I know it's a really basic question but you should just look first before going any further.

    Start, type 'msconfig'

Go to boot tab and check the 'Base Video' option and reboot.

See if that cures it. If it does, you video card driver issues.

or when done with above suggestion you could go into programs and features and remove the graphics driver and restart. if it does not turn off anymore after removing the driver then you could have a problem with the graphics driver or card. it's just process of elimination. if you do remove graphics driver just make a note of the graphics card driver you are currently using. also try turning hibernation off ?. also check advanced power settings just to make sure.

Done that and rebooted, It rebooted in a very low resolution and about an inch or two off either side of the screen was missing, And it also went blank as usual after 3 or so minutes?

Grand, more or less can rule out the video driver.
You can uncheck that box again.

This time goto the services tab and disable all of them, reboot.
    Check that.

not correct. to rule out the video driver you have to remove it. if the video driver is damaged it is always best to remove it for test. if the problem still exists then you can rule out the driver. registry files can still affect the display thats why it should be uninstalled to make sure.

if you can connect the laptop to another external monitor that would be alot faster in troubleshooting this problem.

also you could try a CHKDSK for errors on the HDD. windows button, all programs, accessories, command prompt, right click command prompt and run as administrator, then type in CHKDSK it's worth a shot as well to rule out errors.

    Will run CHKDSK now, Thanks

    EDIT: Found no problems.

When the screen goes blank, if you hold it up to a bright light can you still faintly see it? If so then it's an inverter or backlight fault.

just a question. when the laptop is turned on normally can you see any artifacts on the screen even tiny ones like red/blue/yellow squares before the monitor shuts down ?.

I had to move room here with the laptop as i couldn't concentrate. ok the first red marker that say's error if you right click that and click event properties it will give you some info. the error that is causing the problem will be here and the error would have been logged at the exact time the monitor shut down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,028 ✭✭✭TheMilkyPirate

Sorry bit confused here, There's quite a lot of errors here not sure which one im looking for exactly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭zenno

it's not the critical kernal power. but if you can look for an error regarding the closest time the monitor went off and see what it says up the top in details.

I am just trying to find an error code to the exact time your monitor shutdown and obviously the monitor shut down today so it should have an error code in here. other than that you will have to wait for the blue screen of death again and write it down. it should start with 000x..........

Sorry i caught you wrong, I thought you meant an error code from the last time the screen went blank not the last time i got the BSoD. In saying that the error above is fairly close to when it happened last time but i'll probably have to wait for it to come up again. Will it happen in safe mode no?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭zenno

ok i am looking at the service manual in regard to this error code 0x8080000000000000 service control manager and it does cause the system to crash and stall if corrupted or damaged. just looking through it here. also one of the other posters here had you turn off the services in msconfig and you said there was no monitor shutdown problem after doing this. i'll let you know if i can find the problem.

you did say the monitor was not shutting down in safe-mode in networking i thought. if so i would seriously doubt the monitor will shut down in safe-mode. it is definately a service i'm sure that is causing this. but will take time to track it down. also if you see any other errors in the timeframe of the monitor shutting down post it here. and if you do get the bsod again in the meantime write it down as that will be the answer to this problem.

ok. if you have your windows installation disk insert it into the drive. click windows button, in the search bar type in SFC /SCANNOW use a space after SFC

you might not need an installation disc if you already have windows 7 backup on drive D it will do it automatically. if there is a system service file causing this problem it should fix it. if not will have to just get that error code from bsod. the only problem with unchecking all services in msconfig and clicking one at a time to troubleshoot the problem is that it would be seriously time consuming. let us know if sfc /scannow fixes this problem. it will take time so be patient.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭zenno

also i have used sfc /scannow in the search bar which works but if you need to, you should also click windows button, all programs, accessories, and right click command prompt and run as administrator and do the sfc /scannow from there. also this can be done in safemode as well just to clarify.

just to say' Standard Toaster had the right idea, but the amount of services that have to be checked to find the one causing the problem would take a very long time to track down. but as you said the monitor stayed on after shutting down all services that narrowed it down to a service that seems to be the main problem.

I am just curious to ask but is that laptop you are using a Toshiba laptop ?.

also just for a test, when the monitor switches off again in normal mode just close the laptop fully for 5 seconds and then open it again and see if the monitor comes back on. it could even be the sensor that could be dodgy.

there are so many things that can cause this problem. always remember to write down any error from a bsod it can make the difference of hours of tracking or 10 minutes for a fix.
