I put two social welfare cheques away last year without cashing them as I needed to put money aside for bills....I then forgot where I'd put them and despite several attempts to find them, only found them again today..... one is from april 2010 and the other from oct 2010 -so both are way older than the six months before a cheque becomes void.

Ill be gutted if I can't cash them, I put them away especially to try and manage my bills and had to borrow from family to cover them instead. Should I just try to cash them and hope the bank teller doesn't notice the dates? or should i ask social welfare to re-issue them? -will they tell me if i managed without them that I mustn't need them re-issued now?

If they're out of date they're out of date, and if you try to cash them in the hope the bank won't notice the date you could get yourself in trouble. Your only option, IMO, is to contact social welfare and explain the situation.

The bank will check, you won't get these past them.

Go to the welfare office and tell them what you've told us. You have the cheques, could not locate them and can they be re-issued.
No they won't make any comments about you not needing them or not.

An office runs on procedures and people follow them.
Somewhere they have a rule on this, you won't the be the first to ask. So head into the office and ask, it's a yes or no question and answer

Bring the cheques back to SW and ask them to issue new ones. Happened to me before, they will prob take about ten days to send you out new ones. No biggie :)

OP: I put a cheque away that was issued to me by my union 2 years ago and it turned up in a book about 6 months ago :o
I rang my union and told them what happened. They re issued the cheque to me. I also sent back the out of date cheque to them which they requested!

There really was no problem, and I think people forgetting about cashing cheques is more common then you think ;)
