Like any other OS, you can download any format you can find software to play.

VLC will handle pretty much anything.

You can use Videomonkey to convert the avi to MP4 for use with iTunes if you want to share it with other computers or an Apple TV.

    Pretty much anything.

MPEG Streamclip is good at converting file formats.

The built in software QuickTime, will pretty much play what you need including avi. Perian or VLC will handle any of those odd codex you come across from time to time.

    +1 for perian.

Once you have the right codec your mac will play just about anything. I have a mini in use as a media centre and I can't remember the last time it refused to play something.

You need this for Quicktime player to show AVIs. Flip4Mac ( free - non pro version ) converts to form Quicktime can play.

AVI = Native Microsoft ( PC) file format.

MOV= Native Apple (Mac) file format.

In principle AVI should be the least likely format to use on an Apple!

No need to confuse him to be honest. Perian and the ones outlined above are more than sufficient..

To the orginal poster, just use VLC, Mplayer or Perian and you'll be ready to go to play AVI's (and most other video formats) on your Mac.

thank you for the simple clarification.

I seem to be missing a certain natural aptitude that others have for all this stuff.

AVI is a container format. It holds various data elements in a single file.

The video format is likely H.264 and is contained as an element of the AVI file.

ok mac/tech lingo savvy people, is there somehow that I could learn a little of the lingo when it comes to downloading movies etc? Like, for e.g. when I look for a movie torrent on a particular site, and there are loads of different options, I have no idea which one to go for? Like, DVDR, xviD, blue ray etc? I have no idea what to look for? As for seeding and leeching - again - clueless.

So rather that replying on a forum, is there somewhere on line where I could learn more about all this stuff??

    Help is much appreciated,

    S
