no sound to amp from tv by optical connection

I got a new amp and speakers (Sony HT-DDWG800) and im trying to get sound from my LG475310 to the speakers. Ive connected the two with a Belkin optical cable but Im not getting any sound. As far as I can tell the optical is the only audio output the TV has.

Theres a red light on the tvs optical output and the a red light on the cable end going into the amp so it seems to be working that far. I connected the optical cable to the TV input of the amp and selected the TV input on the amp. Ive also set the input mode to AUTO but theres still no sound.

    Any ideas?

The only thing I can think of is the Belkin cable has an annoying string of plastic coming off the end (I presume to indicate if a signal is ther) which may be preventing the cable going into the connector the whole way. But as I said when you unplug it from the amp you can see the red laser on the cable end.
