Might pop in and have a look at this tomorrow? Anybody heard any rumours about any surprise visits tomorrow? I know USAF planes have made appearances previous years.

As regards surprises, the planning document linked above contains the following entry under the Procedures section:
    8) USAF TBC (possibly Oceanic Departure)

... so my guess from that is they are trying to get a passing C-17 or similar to drop in.

Also in the above doc, there are departure times for the aircraft using Dublin Airport:
    1) City Jet Avro RJ Bray 1532 – Airborne 1521 E2/E7 – 11 mins
    2) Aer Lingus Retro A320 1620 Local - Airborne 1609 E7/E2 – 11mins
    3) IOLAR 1717 – Airborne 1657 E2/E7
    4) S61 EIMES 1557
So looks like the Cityjet Avro will open the show at 3:30 if no surprise materialises and the Iolar will close it.
[EDIT: Correction: From the same doc, looks like the Army parachute team will open and close the show with the above being the first/last aircraft displaying]

Reminder to anyone heading to Bray tomorrow that the traffic route into the north end of the town comes to a standstill and usually backs up onto the M11 as the start time approaches. Use the DART if at all possible.

Also, I've seen people asking about watching from up no Bray Head. You can, many do, and it provides a unique perspective of an air display but do bear in mind that as well as being above, you are quite some distance horizontally from the display centre and, for the smaller aircraft, this is a drawback. And for The Blades display, I would really recommend being front and centre down on the shoreline!

I don't suppose there'll be anywhere online that'll webcast the radio frequency like LiveATC?

    Weather doesn't look too promising:
    METAR EIDW 241000Z 29009KT 9999 FEW016 BKN045 15/10 Q1013 NOSIG=

The significant bit is FEW clouds at 1600 feet, Broken cloud at 4500. That's a Dublin airport.

Will need a bit of improvement by 3:30.

Anyone know what radio frequency will be used for the airshow this afternoon?

Found it in the PDF... Bray Ops is 122.950.

I believe there is a decent chance of either an A-10 or F-16 demo from the USAF, or so i have been told

I'll believe it when I see it :D

If that happened and given some of the detail mentioned a few posts ago, what for me was sounding a bit 'Meh, Same 'ol Same 'ol', is turning into, "Woohoo, Best Bray Airshow EVA!"

(Taking into account that I am aware that even that lineup would not impress the real enthusiasts, used to the UK shows or even Salthill.)

I am also guilty of having a DOH moment cause I just realised that because the published lineup is the same 'ol same 'ol doesn't mean the show will be the same 'ol same 'ol. It just means the booked acts are the same regulars but that all the other flyovers are dependent on timing, commitments, weather and/or a combination of all three and thus whether they will or wont appear is decided on short notice and thus they can't be put on the 'Programme' in advance.

To recap, I am quite excited about it today as opposed to ' MEH' about it yesterday after having my 'Revelation' :o:D

Simtech posted an update on their facebook saying the frequency is now 119.60 for Bray ops. Just to let you know.

Nice clip of Iolar's flypast on the news just there.

Looked like a good day out.

    I've never been to Bray.
How does it compare to the much lamented Salthill Airshow ?

From my point of view I dont think we will ever see again at an Air Show in Ireland the high speed aircraft etc that were in Salthill, just look what they had over the years

US F16s/F15s/F18s/A10s/Starlifter,B1B,Thunderbirds, F14 tomcats, Blackhawk and Chinook helicopters, Hercules

German: Airforce and Navy display Tornadoes

    French: Forget the aircraft type

    Spanish: Display Mirage

UK: Red Arrows, Tornado, Typhoon, Harrier, Hawk, Tucano, Tutor, Merlin, Sea King.

My God looking at that list I really miss it :mad::mad:

Bray is not as good as Salthill the two years I was at Galway there were better aircraft range and bigger displays with less delays between acts. I find Bray very repeditive with the usual Air Corps P9s Casa and Choppers and Air sea rescue, The same stunt aircraft most years. There is no wow factor and no fast jets. I was dissapointed with the retro display very far away. Also a very long delay between acts.. Nice to see the Iolar before the Airbus what a difference 80 years make.

Any other good air shows commin up this year? i was looking at the one in portrush, any1 ever been there? was it good?
Too bad i was unable to go to bray today...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 327 ✭✭haymur

Portrush is good with a mix of old and new and Air Force jets. 2009 was poor on the Sunday due to bad weather but I heard Saturday was OK. Go early to get a good parking spot.

75 years and yes the retro was disappointing, but it is difficult for a passenger jet to impress unfortunately.. The iolar is a fantastic a\c and it's great to see back up in air again after so long..

i saw the iolar over in duxford 2 weekends ago at the flying legends, now that is an airshow!!, have been to galway and bray before and enjoyed them but, they don't compare at all to the flying legends show, 3.5 hours of non-stop action. well worth a visit if anyone is considering it.

Well, we ended up with a C-130 which did three passes, two quite close in. Better than nothing but not quite the same as an F-16! :)

'Ever' is a long time. It'll happen. The crowds there today shows there is demand. Bray as a venue resembles Salthill in many aspects but the one big difference is Bray Head whose proximity really puts limits on anything with a large turning circle (i.e., fast jets and airliners). If you wat something like the Red Arrows, the show will have to move to another location. Greystones? Dun Laoghaire? Balbriggan? Inland?

I wasn't exactly expecting a full-on Le Bourget-style Airbus test pilot display but they could have at least done one high speed pass like the other large aircraft.

Highlights for me were the Air Corps' AW-139 which really got thrown around the sky and the ever dependable Eddie Goggins (spelling?) and The Blades' displays. And the nice weather, for a change.

Anybody else spot the gob****e on the jet ski who got pounced on by a saftey boats from all directions as he headed into the display zone during The Blades' routine? He was sent packing pretty quick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,606 ✭✭✭Arthur Daley

The retro jet seemed far away and banked away from the crowd. You could have seen better out at the airport. Nice to see the 'iolar' and the C130 wasn't going to come all the way from Germany and not give the crowd a good look.

Has anyone a ballpark amount for what the air show in Bray costs to put on each year. Do they have to pay all the various displays including the Air Corps and the coast guard

There were 4 planes flying in formation over the Tallaght, Limekiln, Templeouge area around lunch time today for a good while. Anyone have any idea who that would be? Getting practice in early for next year?

Yea saw it myself they put on a good show infairness. They were PC-9s from the Irish Air Corps.

Question about those PC-9 from Air Corps. Their show was very short, they displayed simply figures in formation only. Why is that? Pilots have no skills for more?

below Polish Demo Team with similar planes, just to compare it.

BTW. the best, in my opinion, was the Coast Guard Helicopter display. Really good.

that was my first trial with the professional camcorder, sorry for shaking hand. :)

To train for a better display would take too much time from the training schedule
The Polish Air Force is a lot bigger and can spare the pilots and aircraft for practice where as the Air Corps PC 9 fleet is used nearly every day for training.... Simples......

You could contact the crowd running Bray - Simtech. Or you could contact the crowd running Portrush or the Skyfest in Rose of Tralee...

Air Corps and Coast Guard are free - very hard nowadays to get the Air Corps - apparently turned down the Rose of Tralee and that's one of biggest festivals in the country.

With regard to costs, some agencies are free, ie, the State does not charge for the Air Corps to attend whereas commercial companies such as the Blades will charge to attend(picked up by the sponsors) as well as having a contingency fee added on, ie, if they have to stay over because of bad weather, the sponsors pay for hotels, hangarage, extra fuel, etc. Some performers/display acts will do it for fuel/oil costs only and tea/buns thrown in, others will only attend once they see the cheque. In reality, airshows such as Bray depend a lot on personal generosity( an astonishing amount, behind the scenes) and goodwill, especially with public bodies such as County Councils and State bodies such as the Air Corps. Prepping for such a show involves a great deal of string-pulling, begging, gladhanding, calling in favours, etc, etc and, as always, prepping for next year starts as soon as the last punter leaves this year's event.
    regards

The Bray Airshow is not a patch on the Salthill show. Pretty much every year they have the same acts appearing at Bray. There is very little diversification, with mainly civilian prop aerobatic aircraft taking part. The Salthill Airshow and indeed the Air Spectacular's of the late 80's and very early 90's where proper show's. I don't know if the venue is an issue, but they have never had a major military display team nor a fast jet display in Bray. They certainly get the crowds at the show, so I doubt it next years format will change.
