Bangernomics - 3 Month Report

Well, I bought the Corsa just over 3 months ago from my brother for €300. Good value for what it was, a '99 1L with one month's tax and 4 months NCT was worth about €700. Over the time it's given me no trouble for a first car. Yes, there was a slight brain failure when it came to calculating the MPG but that's sorted now. It's very slowly dripping oil from the filter housing and pan, few spots of rust here and there and the exhaust is rattling where a rubber hanger came off but it's in good shape. Getting about 40mpg and everything works.

Overall I can't fault it other than to say that I hate the looks, performance, colour and noise.

Anyone else got a bangernomics car to report on?

I've mine about 2 months, maybe more. Diesel Golf estate with currently 238k on it, bought it with 232k on it.

Bar me breaking the sump twice, it's been perfect, not a single bother, no knocks or rattles.

It just returned a very respectible 170 miles for 20 quid, too. How bad :D

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

You can test it 3 months before it's due. It will still have the same valid until date

I'll reserve judgement on how much value for money your car was when you bought it, until you put it through the test :)

Make sure you will keep us updated here!

    Not too bad at all.

Citroen Xantia that had being lying up at home. 4 new spheres fitted for 150 euros and the most comfortable car on the road is a result.

Average mpg is about 55mpg on back country roads but on the main road I actually managed to get it beyond 67mpg. Well happy with that :D

    HDI rocks :D

And you can get 'em for half nothing too. Very tempting.

    Edit: Yikes!

Got an e34 520i on the cheap-o about a month ago or so,

so far so good mechanically and aesthetically, gave it a few serious goings over with wax & polish, its a pain in the bum to clean the multi-spoke wheels but they clean up good. Still on the lookout for some nice leather though,

Mileage wise, currently doing a lot of short runs to work and stuff, getting maybe 25mpg when i don't wanna hear too much vanos, when im playing too much with the happy pedal, 20 quid will get me about 60 miles.

Also, does anyone know how accurate the little mpg guage would be in these?, my guess is: not very. so i dont go by it..

Two year report in my case, 1994 Corona bought in the auctions for pennys with 340K klms, last nite she went over 420K klms. Not one break down to report getting a bit smokey but a oil change seems to of sorted that although its a diesel and fairly high miles. Had to replace the starter that i had out of another car so no cost there. Failed the NCT twice on rear brake imbalance but got it on the 3rd time. Still plodding away quite nicely returning good mpg for a auto diesel and currently doing 1000-1200 klms a week.

Bought an W210 E200 (97) in april. Paid €1000. It needed a water pump (worn bearing) and rear disks.
Mileage was 99,998 the day I bought it.
Bar/ASR light is intermittant but a cheap fix - brake pedal switch which I have sourced in a local motor factor for €25. I just have to fit it soon.
There is 9 months NCT left on it and I'm getting a very respectable 33mpg.
Gearbox is perfect albeit a bit clunky when cold but to be expected.
    Very very happy with it.

Do you genuinely get 67mpg out of it landyman as in have you calculated that figure between fill ups at the pumps or is that figure coming from an on board computer.

The reason I say that is that my last car being a Vectra had an on board computer that showed average MPG. I always considered the figure to seem way of the mark so I reset the computer when I filled to brim and took note of mileage. Then next time I was refilling to brim I got my pen paper and calculator. I calculated mileage covered and converted the litres it took to gallons and worked out the real MPG....It was quite different to what the computer was telling me and more in line with what I was half expecting.

67MPG seems fantastic altogether and fair going if it is the real figure;)

Toyota Yaris 1.0 litre VVTi - 2000. Got it for free off a relative; needed an NCT and general tidying. Been driving it for around 18 months, done about 10-12k miles and besides a replacement MAF sensor, it hasn't given any real trouble. The transmsission is a bit whiney but I don't think it's going to give up anytime soon.

I had plans to maybe replace it with a classic 205 GTi 1.6, but it is just so reliable, painless to own and cheap to run that I'm finding it hard to let it go.

30 euro of diesel got me 315 miles @ 139.9 cent a litre. Dublin to galway, on the motorway at a constant 55mph.

Tank had virtually nothing in it before, almost dry

That works out at 67MPG alright. Very very impressive.;)

Seems trip computers are almost always optimistic by 10-20%.

Mine currently reads around 44 average. Tracking it myself it works out at 40 so it seems to be about 10% optimistic.

Now i was driving with economy in mind, changing up early, gentle acceleration ands no air con, so under everyday conditions it would be about 58-60mpg on motorway runs

That's excellent. Saw three Xantias in Limerick yesterday. Think it's Motorzone? They were parked in the yard next to the dealer. Rare car these days and if anyone was interested a call would be worth a shot...

Have my banger passat nearly 3 months, so far after buying it it has cost me:

1 lightbulb (something like 2 euro)

    1 fuel filter
    1 oil filter
    1 air filter
    some oil.

it has broken/failed to operate satisfactorily: 0 times so far

Got it with 179,500 approx, now has something over 182,000 when i last remembered to check.

You sure it wasnt castlepark motors? beside the DOE centre/truck parts place? There's a couple of cars that have been sitting in there for years

I get about 60 miles from €20 petrol out of an E38 735 driving around Dublin.

    considering the circumstances

In fairness she's great on the motorway - would get to Galway and back on €60 no bother.

hmmm... well my driving wouldnt be as urban as around dublin, only stopping at 3-4 sets of traffic lights on my 4 mile/15 minute commute..

I did a long trip on the motorway recently and it was like it didnt burn a drop, great economy when cruising!

I suppose it wouldnt be any harm to run a bit of injector cleaner through her,

Actually, i know im going off topic again, sorry, but,

On cold start-ups, the car splutters like its running on 4 or 5 cylinders for about 20 seconds, then its as right as rain, does anyone have an idea what it could be?

If I tip along at 55mph mine literally uses no fuel, I find it hard to do it but the difference is unreal...

Seeing as i just got 94 miles purely town driving and I normally get 150++

well i can add my report.

bought ford mondeo 98' 1.6 for 500eu in march. spent 200eu on bushings service and to pass nct on it. so in total 700eu.

in 3/4 months i only put petrol in to it. Currently misses driving it, as when i jumped to mondeo from skyline i died inside a bit... she just gave me mx5 back as she could not stand me bitching... :o

its being used everyday. work trips, shop trips, drove from cork to dublin airport twice last month.

so far it saved me a fortune.

    insurance: 50eu per month
    tax: 35eu per month
    petrol: 150eu per month

so i save around 235eu per month by just driving mondeo and not skyline.

i just wondering how much will i pay psychologist thought...

I think Johndaman66's method of filling the tank to the brim is more acurate than this method, it's easy to determine whether a tank is full, how empty it is, is more difficult.
