    From www.revenue.ie/forms/med1.pdf

Is there a time limit for making a claim?
Yes. A claim for tax relief must be made within 4 years after the end of the tax year to which the claim relates.

We are still within 4 years of the end of 2007 today.

You can print the form from the link and send it by post, or do it via PAYE Anytime which tends to be quicker.

Your dentist should have given you a Med 2 form. Revenue might ask for it so if you don't have it you'll have to ask the dentist.

You are lucky - Root canal involves the filling of the nerve cana and is not classified as a filling.

Therefore it is claimable under PAYE.

However , you must have the claimable amount paid in of course

Go to the dentist, get the med 2, write to revenue asking them to amend your return or issue a P21 to reflect the med 2.

Do you know if you have to have had paid the amount your claiming in the year you got the work done, or does it count if you have paid in the claimable amount within the last 4 years?

I.E. If I got 4k worth of dental work done in 2009 but happened not to pay any tax in that year, due to working part time, but returned to work full time and paid tax in 2010 and 2011 could I still claim on the Med 1 within the 4 year time frame?

You can only claim back the amount you paid in the year in relation to that tax year

i.e get treatment 2009, pay for same in 2009, claim in 2009.

If you didnt pay tax in 2009 - no refund as its a non refundable credit.

The med 2 you get will have dates of treatment inserted by the dentist and you need to produce this if Revenue raise a query.

The 4 year rule - is a rule re amending returns/making back claims not a carry foward rule (sorry)

    That's not quite correct.

    Copied from http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/it6.html

How is the tax relief given if I incur a Health Expense in one tax year and pay for it in a later tax year?

You can choose whether you want to claim the tax relief for the tax year in which the payments were made or for the tax year in which the expenses were incurred.

Thank you both for your reply and apologies for hijacking this thread!
So if I got the treatment in 2009 (no tax paid) but didnt pay for it in full until 2011 (lots of tax paid!), I can claim?

If you paid for everything in 2011 you can claim for everything in 2011. If you paid some in 2009, some in 2010, and some in 2011 then your 2011 claim is limited to the actual amount paid in 2011.

The Med 2 will (should) show both the treatment dates and the payment dates.
