    Hi Lads,

    I've just bought/traded for a laptop from a chap on Adverts.ie.
Unfortunatly though, he had deleted Vista (its original OS) and had installed Ubuntu on it.
Now whereas I dont mind Ubuntu I wanted to go back to its original OS (and then upgrade to 7 )
Dell though, it seems want to make this as difficult as possible.
The laptop did not come with its original discs and dell want €50 for them

so what Im wondering is......would anyone here have the original driver/application discs for a Dell Studio 1737.

I would be very grateful if you could loan me the discs for a little while.
Im in North Dublin but am mobile so would collect and return them

Alternatively, if you knew where I could download them, that would be great

    many thanks

    MrTrebus

Does it have a windows sticker on the bottom with licence key? Find out if it's home/professional etc. Then torrent the windows7 disc (perfectly legal). When installing use your key. To download this, install a bit torrent client, then google for "windows 7 home OEM torrent". Avoid dodgier sites, use piratebay or whatever (note again: THIS IS PERFECTLY LEGAL!!).

Drivers etc can be found on Dell website. Most stuff will "just work" after installing windows, some stuff like tv tuner/bluetooth will need manual driver.

edit: Ah it's vista you have and want to upgrade? Just buy a windows 7 licence online, download the disc, burn it, then install.

it does have a vista key on a sticker but according to dell that key can ONLY be used with a dell disc !!!!!
the key doesnt work with my copy of vista

now, I have "found" a way around this and gone straight to installing win 7 ont he machine (after some initial research this was the best way to go)

I have downloaded all the drivers from dells website, based on the service tag on the machine, but what I am missing, it seems, is the desktop software/programs that came with the original machine.
For example, installing the quickset drivers/program doesnt seem to make any difference, ie theres no apparant way to use s/w

thats why I was looking for the original discs, but I really appreciate the swift response

    cheers

You need an "OEM" copy of windows, not the normal version.

About those extra programs, they are pretty much ****e and you don't need them. Still should be able to get them off Dell website tho?
