I-Can Freeview HD box

I didn't see any mention of this box on boards anywhere - Tesco in Derry are selling an I-Can GBR-2851T Freeview HD Box for £30. My parents picked up a box after checking that it was an HD box. I thought it was a Technika at first as I didn't know about the other brand but from their initial report, it's working find with the Saorview channels and is about the size of a 10" netbook.

I don't have any other details about it at the moment other than that it accepts the Top-UP TV card as well. There's a picture of it with some basic specs on Amazon.co.uk if you search for the model number.

When I get to play with the box myself (probably in a week or two), I'll try to post some extra details (e.g. if it has the clock issue - actually - how does one check for the issue?).

[Edit - actually, I just spotted that the box was mentioned in one other thread by marclt on 31/5 - sorry! But now it's available in NI too :) ]

ADB I-Can make funky little boxes. I tested one for MPEG4 DVB-T a while back. They are good boxes.

They also do a combo box in the sticky above. It wont do Freeview HD as its a DVB-T tuner rather than a DVB-T2.

According to my folks, the box works fine on all channels, including RTÉ 2. It has teletext but the only thing that does not appear to be available is channel renumbering - so all channels are in the 800s. However, it does appear to have ordered the channels correctly, albeit starting at 800 for RTÉ 1.

I saw on the digitalspy website that the main thing to do with these boxes is to update the firmware to the latest revision to make the box more stable but after that, they seem to work fine.

You are looking for LCN in the menu. Logical channel numbering.

I got to play with the box for a short while at the weekend. The unit does run a bit warm after a while but not alarmingly so. It has several menus, including for accessing BBC iPlayer, network configuration, scanning channels (it displays signal strength in dB) but there does not seem to be any option for renumbering logical channel numbers. This isn't much of an issue if you can only receive Saorview since there are just a few services to choose from (currently).

There was a slightly longer pause when switching to RTÉ 2 than to the other channels but not that much. It also picks up RTÉ's digital teletext. Connections on the back include a SCART connection, HDMI and UHF pass-through.

There is one annoyance with this box - if you switch to RTÉ Jr when it is not on air, the box seems to think the service is then on UHF ch 57 (Truskmore's 2nd Mux frequency). If you change to any other channel, it still thinks everything is on Mux 2 and so displays no picture for about a minute before returning to normal. If RTÉ Jr is on-air, this does not happen. It may go away again when Mux 2 is back on air?
