Is the Stihl own brand 2-stroke oil mixed 50:1 good enough for an older chainsaw which I usually pour no-name 25:1 petrol in? the saw is a 028 AV

Should be fine. I have always used their own brand oil and never had any problems.

That saw is 40 -1 mix according to the link above. If the mix is to lean it wont take long to destroy your saw.
After some more looking on the net it seems Stihl have updated the manual and 50-1 is reccomended for that saw now.

I run full synthetic at 40:1
The only reason that companies recommend 50:1 is to reduce emissions.
If you run good quality oil at 40:1 you will never have a problem with the mix ratio.
Personally 50:1 is too lean an oil mix ,I much prefer running a little more oil.
    40:1 is 120ml oil for 5litres petrol.
