One of me friends pointed me towards this there today. Apparently the worlds oldest Football team, Sheffiled FC, have the original rule book from back when the sport was invented. It was sold at auction to raise money. Original soccer rules sold at auction Note the rule about a "Fair Catch"!!!:eek::eek:

Not that suprising really.
Soccer and Rugby evolve from the same public school background and at the time there were numerous arguments and fallings out over which rules to use when one club visited another for a challenge game.

You can even find stories of games where the first half was played with on set of rules and the second halve another set
