How long usually between iPhone/iPad announcement date and availability?

I've a relation who'll be in America at the end of September/start of October and I'm hoping to have her pick up a new iPhone and maybe a new iPad if a new one is announced. If the predicted announcement date of mid-September happens will the products be released by then? What has the roll-out time been like in previous years?

iPhone 4 went on sale in the US two weeks after announcement. I imagine it will be the same if not sooner with the iPhone 5.

I don't put much weight in the new iPad rumours. Apple have no competition worth talking about so there's no reason for them to release a new iPad so soon.

Probably major supply issues as well

Cheers, I should be sorted so. I think I'll wait for the iPad just in case.
