I recently switched broad band provider. I use Windows Live Mail and can receivee incoming -when I try to send out going I get this message.

The connection to the server has failed.
    Subject 'test'
    Server: 'mail.iol.ie'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
    Protocol: SMTP
    Port: 25
    Secure(SSL): No
    Socket Error: 10060

I tried contacting my new broadband provider they were only slighty helpful their reply being:

    Hi,

You need to contact with "iol.ie", as we are not hosted that domain/site. We are not blocking SMTP servers at our end.

If you have any other problems, or if there is anything else we can do to assist you just let us know.

I want to keep my old email name as it is registered with ESB,bank etc

Anyone any ideas how I can send my emails? Ta.

you have to change the outgoing mailserver to the one provided by your new Broadband provider, leave the incoming one alone

    Who is your ISP?

To prevent spamming most SMTP servers will only accept outgoing emails from their own clients.

IOL's SMTP server will only work for IOL customers the same goes for Eircom, UPC, and every other ISP as far as I know.

They're called webworld but don't seem to have SMPT- how come I can receive incoming?

You can receive incoming because you are only asking the mail server for emails addressed to yourself, you are not trying to send emails to other people.

Within the household we have email addresses from a variety of sources, including IOL and Eircom. The incoming mails come from IOL and Eircom etc, but the outgoing are all routed through the ISP which happens to be a fixed wireless provider.

How does everyone one else on your ISP send emails?

I am surprised they haven't got a SMTP server. If they haven't then I would complain to Comreg.

What's the domain part (i.e. xxxxx@domain) of your e-mail address and what provider were you with previously?

If your e-mail address is say xxxx@iol.ie, then you might have a chance by changing your otbound settings but if your e-mail address is, for example, xxxx@hotmail.com then you're never going to be allowed send outbound e-mails from a Webworld IP through the mail.iol.ie mail server.

Who is your 3G provider? You'd need to use their SMTP server to send email,

There should not be a space between 3ireland.ie, although that looks right if your on 3 broadband. There is a possibility the error lies on 3s side!

It may be sorted overnight, if not ring Three tomorow

Good find, looks like Three don't even fully support the SMTP so I certainly wouldn't be relying on it from a reyability perspective. You can use http://webmail.eircom.net or like I do get a Gmail account and set it to send and receive using your Eircom account :)
