imac 27" Infrared compatibility for remote...

    My buddy got a 27" iMac there a while ago. He didn't get a remote with it.

    Then he got one of the old white ones and it doesn't appear to be working. We tried it with my white remote and that didn't work either.

    Could the IR Reciever be fried? Or are the new iMacs only compatible with the new silver Remotes?
    --(or indeed could it be a pairing issue? There is a fresh install of Snow Leopard)
