MTG - getting started and cards set(s) to buy?

OK - been playing with a friend for a couple of weeks, so I understand the rules and can play. Obviously the experience necessary to be a top player is miles away. Also play the 2012 PS3 game.
Want to buy cards - and I am aware the new 2012 stuff is coming out. So if I wanted to get a solid starter bunch of cards -what should I be buying?

I've done the usual web trawling and I have an understanding of how the cards are sold - but what should I get as a total decent/starter "set".

    Thanks.

The new expansion of cards that are out, came out today. So i would say start their. And yes you are correct its magic 2012 expansion.

I started playing again late last year and just started with the latest's expansion which was Zendikar at the time. I did not buy the older stuff cause i knew i was only going to playing standard for the time beening.

I would say buy them at your local shop first.
Then try online like Ebay, their are lots of sites u could use to buy someone else might be able to help their.

Well dunno what style of game you want to play so cant recommend any particular sets. But the newly released 2012 intro packs are pretty good, a solid 60 card deck that while not amazing will still work well, plus a randomized booster pack.

    http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/productarticle.aspx?x=mtg/tcg/magic2012/themedeck#deck1

Heres the five 2012 Intros and breakdown of whats in each pack. Also a short synopsis of how each deck plays.

After that....well you can go the usual individual boosters route for random cards (Sub City on Exchequer St is best for these at 4 packs for €13), theres the "Fat Pack" of 9 boosters and some extras (extra land cards, deck boxes, handy carrying box) for €39 or if you dont mind some older cards the Deck Builder Toolkit if you can find them, comes with around 285 semi-random cards + 4 boosters and a giant bundle of land for only €20, but it features the last run of expansions before the 2012 stuff came out.

Thanks - I bought one of the new intro packs. The Green/Red one, since that is what I had been playing when I was learning.

Zendikar, Worldwake, Rise of the Eldrazi and Magic11 will be out of rotation come September, so maybe try not to buy too many of them as they won't be in the 'standard' format from then on. For casual use though all of them will still be fine. If you do plan on being a world champ though, it's nice to keep your cards quite current.

You already have a starter deck, so try and find what you like/don't like about it. Then either buy boosters/trade/buy singles to fill out your deck with the style you want.

Other than that, there is a Friday Night Magic tourney every week in Gamersworld, you get a bunch of cards(which you keep) and make a deck out of them for the tournament. It's a great fun and and even better learning experience plus the lads/ladies there are all sound. The details are easily found in this forum in various threads.

Well, well, well.............bought 4 boosters (Sub City do a good deal) and got lucky by landing myself a 2 Mythic Rares (Garruk, Primal Hunter and Bloodlord of Vaasgoth). So am I incredibly lucky, or does Mythic Rare actually mean fairly common?

It's a 1 in 8 chance that your rare will be a mythic one. So yeh, you got pretty lucky there alright!
Garruk is worth about 20+ euro

What was the deal in Sub City?

It was 1 booster for €3.50 or 4 boosters for €13. Which to me looks good, from what I know its usually €4 or €4.50 each elsewhere in Dublin, though I guess they may also do deals. That Garruk card looks cool so I will keep it and throw it into the Green/Red intro deck that I have acquired. It is probably totally unsuitable, but what the hell............

The new 2012 core sets are pretty decent. Bought the black core set the other day, built up of vampires and is set around sacrificing creatures to pump up other creatures. I'd suggest getting something like that!
