I would buy a HP Proliant Microserver, there is a cashback deal at the moment so it winds up pretty cheap. link

It's basically just a low-powered computer with no operating system. It's got internal drive bays and a good few USB ports, so you could use it whatever way you want. There's any number of OSs you could put on it, free or paid. The only downside is that you'd want to be fairly computer literate.

Yes, you can remove the drive from those externals. Inside will just be a WD Green drive. If they had any kind of warranty, it would be voided as soon as you opened the enclosure, otherwise work away.

If you wanted to use them with the Synology you just plug them into the drive bay, no sata cables needed. You'd need to format the drive before use, so make sure you don't have important data on the drive.

    Cheers,

Do you have to format I have all my movies on the drives.

Was just looking to stream them to a wdtv live.

Do you need to format them whether you connect directly or by usb.

Do any of the sonology ones have 3 or 4 usb slots.

With the likes of the Synology you would definitely have to format to use the drive internally. Most of those systems use some kind of RAID or JBOD so they would reformat the disks before use.

With the HP Proliant it depends on the OS you use. It should be possible to do what you want (keep the contents on the drive). And you can definitely just connect an external HDD via USB and share the contents - again, depending on the OS you use. See that thread for more info and there's some very knowledgeable folks there too.

Do you have all your content backed up? You really should, regardless of whether you plan to reformat or not.
