    hello guys,

I just received my tax credit certificate and it claims that i have both 1650 of personal tax and PAYE tax credits.

which i think is wrong because I have only worked twice and ive earned less than 1000 together.

So what do I do with this tax credit certificate ?

your credits have nothing to do with what you earn, they are used to determine how much you can earn tax free

Everyone gets the personal credit and the paye credit is given if you have PAYE income.

So in your case with credits of 3300, you can earn 16,500 before you have to pay PAYE (usc and prsi would be payable alright depending on what you are earning)

    Can i claim them now.

when i was working i was charged 86 in tax apart from USC.

Can i get this back as I'm a student.

    thanks

was it tax or prsi you paid as you cannot get the prsi back?

I take it that you were working in 2011 so if you paid tax you cannot get it back until next year if you do not work again for the year.

if you do work and have your p45, you would get it back through the payroll as part of your weekly/monthly wages

The old saying of "you shouldnt be paying tax because you are a student" is actually completely wrong and being a student makes no difference. It is just that students usually dont earn enough to bring them into the charge to tax (ie over the 16,500K in your case)

    I was working this summer.

It was PAYE that i paid.

I spoke to one of my friends and he said he could claim one tax back.

I dont have my p45 now but i wil call the office to send it to me asap.

Your present circumstances will dictate whether you can claim back the tax you paid or not .

If you are unemployed , then fill in Form P50 and send to tax office .

Look again at your Tax Credit Certificate , - Does it say on top '' tax cert for 2011 and following years '' or does it just say tax ctredit for 2011 on a week 1 basis .

If you started a new job and your cert is cumulative ( ''and following years '') , you should be able to claim the tax back through your new employers payroll.

Also remember if you paid PRSI - A1 contributions , you may be able to claim a refund .
Whether you have a medical card or not will dictate your refund amount .
