    Hi all
My query is kind of hard to explain but here goes,i have a cold feed water pipe going into a plate cooler in a milking parlor which cools the milk before it goes to the bulk tank , there is an outlet on the plate cooler which the water returns from , at the moment this water is going to a drain approx 350 gallons per day ,now i want to take a tee from ths return pipe and fill a 200 gallon storage tank which is used to wash down the parlor and when this tank is full the remaining water will go to the drain. I will tee off the return pipe and fit a ballcock on the storage tank .So i ask is there a valve available that i can fit on the end of the drain pipe which would remain closed while tank is filling and when the tank is full and ballcock closes the pressure comes on this valve and it opens allowing remaining water to flush to the drain . Thanks in advance.

Why not run the feed from the cooling plate directly to the ballcock on the tank.
Then fit an overflow pipe on the tank. Once the tank is full the water will flow out through the overflow pipe to your drain. No need for extra valves etc.

Ok good suggestion but from where the storage tank is positioned to the drain outlet is a concrete yard which i would have to dig up, i can come overhead with overflow pipe but this would be higher than tank level so would not work. Thanks for reply.

You can use a non return valve and a gravity loop.

What you do is the feed to the storage tank you put a non return valve on so when it fills it equilises the pressure and shuts off then the water diverts to the old course.

A gravity loop is where you rise the old course about 2 meters up in the air then back down. It will all depend on the pressure. if less pressure less of a loop can be used. Then what happens is the water takes the easy path into the tank first and fills it. When the pressure equilises because its full it will divert up the gravity loop. If the pressure reduces on the valve due to it being emptied the valve will open again.

    does this make sense?

It sure does ,i installed the submersible pump thats feeding everthing so i know the pressure switch cuts off at 60 psi , i have plenty of head to create a high gravity loop . Thanks for replies.

Just be careful. Thats going to be a high loop at that pressure. perhaps you can fit a restrictor like a gate valve to reduce it.
