I'm just curious, is it possible to ever see the milky way that clear with just the naked eye, or it only possible to see that much detail with long exposure photography?

Beautiful pictures! I spent a few years in NZ and the clarity of the night sky was breathtaking. I lay on a beach in Kaikoura one night and it was just a blanket of stars over my head! Also to be able to see the galactic centre with my own eyes was a very special moment for me.

Just watched that YT clip - pretty amazing stuff.

I am not mad into or understand astronomy that well - so from a real amatuers point of view (:D) it looks so completely differet to anything I've seen from the east coast of Ireland.

digme - would you really get those kind of night skies on the west coast?

Is it all just down to the light pollution?
