Abscess

Hope someone in here will guide me in the right direction. Almost certain that I have a tooth abscess. It's a small boil like thingy on my top right of my gum. It's above a tooth which, tbh, is in bits (half has broken off and most of a filling has fallen out). I'm wondering what's the best option as I'd probably rather an extraction and antibiotics than a root canal. Also I'm not very good with dentists, have a massive fear and haven't been in years.

    Hey OP,
Sounds like you have a chronic infection causing a draining sinus from the apex of a dead tooth root through the bone and out of the gum. This slowly leaks pus and because the pus leaks out and does not build up in the tissues it is rarely that sore....

As you say, you have 2 treatment options, root canal to try to save the tooth or an extraction.

You say that the tooth is in bits- it may not be worth saving with a root canal treatment....
So all that's left is an extraction, a good patient dentist should be able to sort this out under local anaesthetic... Obviously some extractions are more difficult than others... If you are off the wall nervous, you should look into IV sedation for treatment.

    Good luck,
    OS

sometimes a doctor will give you medication for an abcess. but your best option is extraction if the tooth is in bad state. extraction is not that painful during but there may be some pain after.:(

Antibiotics will reduce the size of the infection however only dental treatment (root canal or extraction) will fix it. It will come back stronger after the antibiotics have worn off.

Extractions aren't painful under anesthetic. You'll be nervous and all that but once it's over you'll wonder what you were worried about.
