rules of the road.... cyclist v motorist

i was out for a cycle the other day with a mate who is just getting into cycling. we were on a country road( now not the narrow one car type it is very comfortable for two cars to pass without slowing down) we were cycling side by side and some very impatient d1ck started beeping his horn in his van. my mate got a little startled and looking around became a little disorientated and wobbled a little. now he didnt come off the bike or anything but was a little intimadated. the driver persisted to blow his horn and shouting out his window even on passing us.

now my question here is who does the rules of the road favour here? i was led to believe a cyclist on the road has as much room as a car width.

    any advice would be appreciated

The law allows you to cycle 2 abreast, so the van shouldn't have beeped at you. He is required to wait until a safe gap to overtake you, you do not need to move to accommodate him.

However, there are some times (and I'm not saying this is necessarily one) where sometimes it's wiser to cycle in single file in order to prevent traffic building up.

In this case vandriver=cock. There are loads of them about.

You're perfectly entitled to cycle two-abreast if it doesn't cause undue inconvenience to other road users.

You're also perfectly entitled to take a reg and report the driver for inconsiderate behaviour. There are penalty points to be had for that. Also, if there was a company logo on the van, a call to them to complain could help.

    thanks for the replies lads.

i had a feeling we were doing nothing wrong. i had tried to memories his reg in case anything got outta hand but fortunitly it didnt. i dont remember it now though. it was a plain white van also so no logo. i had thought of that.

as for the common sense rule of single file i dont think this was one such case. he actually had the chance to pass comfortablly but opted to make his noise.

To be honest I cant imagine they will be the last person you come across who will react like this...

Tonight, while cycling double breasted on the way into Cobh my buddy and I were beeped and sworn off the road by a guy driving a Driving Instructors car, which strangely enough I found very amusing :D!

I have noticed a rise in this, our club spin on Wed nights is getting a lot more abuse than we were even 3 months ago. Not sure why but we have been cut in at the front and even one driver pushed us onto the hard shoulder due to stupid overtaking.
