Hi, I am looking to buy a laptop for college..

When would be the best time to buy a laptop? During the student discounts I suppose? When do they come about??

What specs should I be aiming for.. I have no idea what I should be looking for in a laptop.. Or for what price..

I am utterly hopeless when it comes to buying a new laptop..

    Thanks!

    :)

What are you doing in college?

Will this be a laptop that you will take into college with you all the time, or is it something that will sit on your desk at home for the majority of the time?

It's just so we can get an idea of size.

The upper price limit is completely up to you. So long as you're not doing anything mad on it, i'd say 500/600 would be more than enough.

I think it's simply too big.

I carried a 15" laptop to college for a year, and after 2 weeks I was completely fed up with it. I think something closer to 13.3", or even 11.6" would be best tbh. You don't need much processing power, the most important thing will be battery life and portability. The above laptop fits neither of those criteria.

Using a 15" for college atm, about to replace it(Ancient dell) and Alan is most definitely right, it'll piss you off no end.

http://www.pcworld.ie/Product/HP-Pavilion-dm13101ea-116andquot-Laptop-Silver/305036/301 This is the right kind of spec, but seems way expensive(I've never looked at compacts before though).

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pavilion-dm1-1020sa-Entertainment-Notebook-Processor/dp/B002RT8XQ0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=computers&qid=1310744070&sr=8-1

Little slower but cheaper revision of the same thing.

Having a look around, there are shít all reasonably priced compacts.:(
