Moving to UK - Tax Query

I recently moved to London to start work and about a month ago before I moved, my employer gave me a relocation allowance to help with the moving costs.

The payment was taxed at 42% which I wasn't expecting since I wasn't living in the UK when I got it and I had never worked in the UK before so wouldn't have been registered for tax.

My question is, once I begin work here can I claim any of this back? It seems what happened to my allowance was like the UK version of our emergency tax but I'm not sure.

If anyone can shed some light on me it would be much appreciated
