I want to set up a cake making/bakery business from home and I am wondering what I need to have/do in order to set it up?

To set up a business you will need to either set up as a sole trader or register a private limited company. You will need to also register a business name and apply for a VAT number if your sales are expected to go above €35k, but you don't need to do this until such a time. You will need to register as an employer and pay PRSI if you are employing people.

You will need to contact your local environmental health office and inform them that you are preparing food for public consumption. They will come and inspect the premises to deem it suitable for that use.

You will need public liability insurance if customers are to visit you, you may also need it due to the fact that they are eating your product - i.e. traces of nut in a declared "nut free" product - sue you for millions. If you have anyone working for you, you will need employee liability insurance. If you have big industrial machines you will need extra building insurance, commercial vehicle insurance etc.

Depending where your products will be for sale you may need to invest in barcodes, packaging designs, advertising etc. You haven't given a whole load of info in your question. If you are part-time employed or unemployed claiming SW, you will need to inform them.

You should keep accounts and send in self assesment tax forms at the end of the year, or in the case of a limited company - company accounts.

Thats if you want to be all above board.

If its a small operation, it could be an awful lot of legwork, for not much return....

Short answer - Depending on the scale, you may need to fill out forms and pay tax & insurance, yes

Great advice above, there have been loads of threads on this same topic (very popular idea these days) so if you use the search function you'll find them.

Comprehensive reply above - also consider local authority issues (planning permission and commercial rates) before committing.

Great advise about setting up business. As far as I know if you are going into food production there are certain standards you must abide by. Check out the food safety authority website for more info http://www.fsai.ie/
