Sorry if this has been explained before, but how do you allocate points on a hole?
I see lots of threads where people say they got 39 points or some such, how do you calculate this?

    Use net score

    4 points Eagle
    3 points Birdie
    2 points Par
    1 points Bogey
    Scratch Double or worse

That's if you are playing off 0. If you are playing off 10 you would get a point for a double bogey on the 10 most difficult holes on the golf course, 2 for a bogey etc. If you are playing off 18 you'd get a point for every double bogey. Off 22 you'd get a point for a triple bogey on the 4 most difficult holes on the course etc etc.

I'm sure there'e a more official way of explaining it, but that's how i understand it.

I've no idea what you mean or meant by net score. I'm as much as an amatuer as the OP. I was just explaining the way i understand it.

Gross score is what you actually shot. Net score is when you take your handicap off.

So you can't actually calculate this way until you have a handicap?

    Ok, thanks for the info.
Don't have an handicap yet, besides me myself..;)

Is there anywhere I could go to see how to calculate with a high handicap _ (I presume I'll get a pretty high handicap when I go for one, so just to give myself an idea of the amount of points I might get at the moment)

I'm on 26 which is only a society handicap. If you were to join a golf club the max you'd get is 22 i think and probably only 18.

    AFAIK.

not always true. I know people in my club who have been started out on 26 and 24 over the past few months. I was given 28 myself when I started, granted it was 6/7 years ago but I know of at least 3 clubs that will still start males on 28 if its warranted or I should say I know of 3 people in different clubs who have been given 28 within the past 18 months.

Getcover start yourself out on 18 the next time you play and work from that. Basically 4points for a birdie, 3 points for a par, 2 for bogey and so on. Its good to give yourself a target and make 36 points of 18 your target for the forseeable future.

Would agree with this. Seeing as you are just playing for yourself and trying to compare your rounds to assess progress then just score yourself off an 18 handicap. It's easy to calculate as it's the same points for every hole and knowing that a double bogey will still get you a point will give you the motivation to keep going on a hole even after a couple of duffed shots. I still pretty much hack it around the place and score mainly in the high 20's so anytime I crack 30 I'm happy - keeping scratches off the card is key.
