What small hatchback for €6k?

My uncles ~20 year old fiat panda/punto has expired and is no longer economical to repair/run. He cannot afford to replace it yet he needs a car to get around, so a few of us have got together a few quid to get him something.

The specs are: Something between 1 litre and 1.4. Not too many miles (under say 80k), fairly modern so 2004 onwards.
I've seen some ads on done deal for 2004 golfs and peugeot 307 for around 5k. Based in waterford if anyone wants to post up links.

Does anyone have any recommendations or cars to avoid?

My sister has one of these for a year now and not a peep out of it. Parts are cheap and plentiful, servicing is reasonable, 08 models have lots of toys and only €156 to tax per year.

Well he's gone out and got a car before I could get home and help him choose. He traded in his panda and got..... yes you guessed it ... a 2009 Ford Ka! Also known as a Fiat Panda or a Fiat 500!

I dont think he was aware of the link at the time but they make good small cars I guess so he could have done a lot worse. The deal was €5995 1.2 2009 ford ka with 34k miles (including his own car for scrappage).
