Yes, it should be plug and play. Are you connecting wired or wirelessly?

Did you enter the relevant userid/password for eircom?

You never need those CDs that eircom supply. If you do find it, throw it in the bin, as they only cause more trouble than they're worth.

Limited connectivity errors can be caused by any of a number of things, including faulty hardware. Set up with a wired connection to the modem. Make sure the network adapter settings are all auto. Try to check on a 2nd computer, to rule out faulty hardware in the first one, or to verify a faulty modem.

wired. It is not wireless. It is an old one i got from someone who had it for iol.Itried it with an etheer net cable but only got limited connectivity. It gave an ip address of 169.254.173.214 and no default gateway

Did you configure the modem for use with Eircom broadband? The IOL settings would be different, could explain the limited connectivity, to configure the modem use these settings HERE.

That address means you are having a DHCP conflict somewhere in your configuration.

http://192.168.1.254 is the usual address for Eircom supplied routers - in your case as it was not supplied by Eircom it will most likely be differeent.

Try http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 (it might also be on the bottom of the router.

Failing that see if the manual is available on the manufacturer's site.

If he's getting a 169 IP address it means he won't be able to get to any 192 addresses. Looks like theres a problem with DHCP on the router. Maybe try resetting it?

Since this is an old router (from IOL days!) then it's possible that it is simply broken. A hard reset, by holding it's reset button down (if there is one) might bring it back to default setup. If this fails, then it's probably broken.
