    Interesting.
Pity we cant watch the news piece on the iplayer here. I would have liked to hear what they said.
This is any area I would love to get into.
Any idea where these types of jobs are posted? I know prodrive, m-sport etc have their own vacancy pages.

I did a search after seeing this report and I couldnt find anyting on the BBC website, but Dave Richards of Prodrive was interviewed and he stated that he needed 100 engineers asap. The Prodrive might not list all the vacancies they have.

i get lots of emails for auto jobs, in electronics mostly

these are pretty specific jobs by all accounts and hardly anyone in Ireland would have these skills, Germany also has $hit loads of jobs like these.

You would have to ask why the universities aren't producing people suitable for these positions. An automotive supplier in the west is having serious problems filling positions....

I'm hoping to be an F1 engineer (F1 woud be amazing, but I'd do cars in general as long as its the "m" version for BMW or the equivilant). I'm 17, they'll have to wait :D

If it's the company I'm thinking of I did have a look at some of their mechanical positions but most of them required 5 years experience in X, Y, and Z.

Doesn't matter what the universities are doing if the employer requires X amount of years at a minimum.

That's why universities should be looking at doing work placement and co-op programs so the students are finishing with relevant experience.

Also unfortunately the whole 5 years experience thing is often put in by HR people, as its an easy way for them to sort CV's. There's often people out there with limited experience, but they would be better than someone with 10 years etc..

You'll probably find that F1 isn't all its cracked up to be. They really work their staff hard and don't pay amazingly well. Its often seen that it should be an honour to work for them.

UL have a work placement called Co-op that lasts for 8 months. I did it myself and while at the time I didnt think it was great, in hindisght it really helped my career get started.

I know DCU have a similar program called INTRA but I believe this is for 6 months. It is a good start though.

The 5 years thing though is a put off if you don't have it. I've actually noticed some companies in Northern Ireland and the U.K. no longer use time frames like that. They would state areas they are looking for candidates to have experience in / exposure to on top of their qualifications.

BMW called me for an assessment day months ago but I didnt bother.

no idea on what the salary was and hate assessment crap anyway.

I feel like it would be an honour to work for them! I'd work my ass off to try and become the next Adrian Newey (without a dodgey steering rack).
