    Hi lads
at mastering stage with album at the moment.

the metadata program is asking for a UPC code? we're not duplicating CDs yet, the tracks are just for online stuff and promo CDs we're putting together ourselves.

didn't think UPC was needed at this stage or am I wrong? I know I would get a barcode from the CD duplicator whenever we print proper CDs.

could anyone shed some light please?

and if I need a barcode, is there any good providers u guys use?

    thanks

I don't know that much about it.

But I think the embedded code is used to pay royalties if it gets radio play.

If versions circulate without the code, you might never receive a royalty if they're played. And funnily it can be hard to prove it's yours if a record company claims the recording as there's.

I've heard of it being done with dance music. Major labels claiming someones track as theirs then banging it on compilations.

yeah i knew i needed individual ISRC codes for the tracks themselves but just didn't think i needed a barcode (UPC/EAN code) unless i was selling physical product.

    i thought wrong clearly!

anyways...i bought a barcode and forwarded it on to the producer so that hopefully that'll sort 'er out.
