    :mad::(

Anyone got any secrets on how to stop teeth grinding at night...

I've gone to the dentist and got a shield made, its like a gum shield. I,ve tried for 2 weeks now to wear it every night but I cant its so uncomfortable (went back to the dentist and ask should it be so difficult to get used to they said yes)

its driving me up the wall, waking with headaches everyday and sore jaws. Not to mention the damage its done/doing to my teeth.

At this stage i'll try anything :(

Sorry if this is in the wrong place mods :)

Have you ruled out the possibility that you may have worms?

    Are you stressed?

Stress/heavy-load-work can cause it.. in my profession, I prescribe either:
1- off work/stress or if not managed:
2- muscle relaxants (over a short period.. and becareful, it causes sedation)

I suffered horribly with teeth grinding for years. It's somewhat heriditary but is definitely made worse by stress.

I went down the road of getting a soft gum shield from the dentist. This didn't work. I was referred on to a jaw specialist in Dublin who made a jaw splint for me (€800) ... It has changed my life. I do sometimes get some pain but only5% of what it was a few years ago. Pm if you want details of the specialist.

jaw splint can be made by any dentist (they refer them to a lab) and charge you only 60 euro! or you can buy it from a pharmacy (its silicon you put on boiling water) for 30 euro.

jaw splints do not work with everybody, they can obstruct breathing while sleeping and feeling like a choke. hence, they try their best not to prescribe it to everybody (unless they are willing to pay 800 euro) - again, medicine in ireland is just a pure biz ;-)

€800!?!?? I'm a grinder myself and initially had a night-splint made for the bottom teeth, but later had one made for the top with more success. I think both were €80.

What exactly did you get for €800?

I have one that I purchased from my dentist for €320. You can get one for €80 but they tend to break/wear our easily. I don't use mine all the time, just when I'm feeling stressed.

Google says if you relax the muscles of your jaw by placing a hot teatowel over the area for a few mins before bed, it can ease it.

The jaw splint I have is not like a silicone gum shield - it made of a hard plastic (almost like glass) that fits exactly to your jaw preventing you from grinding your teeth by moving the jaw forward.

Yep I had one of the 800 euro ones, it took me ages to get used to but by God once I did it worked a charm. I was also stressed after the death of my mother and that eased in time too....hence I no longer need to use it. A hot oat pack that you get in the chemist was also prescribed by the cranofacial surgeon and also a number of neck and head exercises to get the muscles to relax. I would recommend persevering with it if you can:cool:

my wife has the same problem and she is using the gum shield...it was very uncomfortable at the beginning, so she went back to the dentist to get it adjusted and now she uses it without any problem and the headaches are gone. You should see another dentist and getter a better gum shield.

I grind my teeth and wear a gum sheild on my bottom teeth, dentist took mould for it. took a while to get use to, but i now get a full nights as i use to wake up from the grinding it was that bad, the headaches have gone and the pain in my jaw. plus i see how damaged the sheild is, its worn in spots. my teeth are in bits from grinding. so spend the few bob and get a sheild, €125 for mine well worth the money.

also heard a good trick sleep on you back. your jaw will fall back and your mouth opens so no grinding. i couldnt always twist and turn at night.

    Hey,

I've suffered with a similar problem. I've always been grinding my teeth, as far back as I can remember, in my sleep. About two years ago I ended up with TMJ, couldnt open my jaw properly and had a lot of pain and headaches. I ended up going to a dentist in Turkey who made a mouthguard for me (silicone) for 150euro. It fit over my bottom teeth. I wore it for about 6 months before I managed to chew holes in it. It didnt stop me grinding and I still got headaches, but the jaw problems stopped and at least I wasnt damaging my teeth anymore. My dentist then sent me to an orofacial pain specialist in Dublin because of the headaches and dizziness I was experiencing. He prescribed me muscle relaxants for 3 months, they did seem to get rid of the headaches after a couple of weeks (I had to keep a diary). He said that the muscles would be trained to stop moving if I took the muscle relaxants consistently for 3 months. After 3 months I was supposed to go back and get a proper mouthguard made, the one I had was actually making my jaw clench more as it was silicone, but I couldnt afford it. The mouthguard I had caused other problems like sleep apnea etc. So it wasnt ideal. I'd avoid silicone mouthguards that are just moulded to fit over your bottom teeth.

Now I dont have the money to get a proper mouthguard so I'm just living with the headaches and dizziness, but thought I'd share the above :) good luck!

Forgot to mention, about 3 months after I stopped taking the muscle relaxants the symptoms started again, it might have been different had I had a proper mouthguard I'm not sure. Worth looking into though!
