Looks like it is that easy.

    4. ECU programming
    5. PIN Code Reading
    6. BMW key programming

Its been that easy for years. however most corrections can be picked up by dealer software checks in various locations. These type of tools modify the head up display.

Some cars aren't as easy to do or disguise, but yes it's relatively easy to "adjust" the mileage of a car.

Hence why we look for things like excessively worn steering wheel/seatbelts/doorcards/gearknob.

It's more of a combination of all that may lead you to believe a cars mileage has been adjusted in the wrong way, it's very common case with newer, ex Lease company cars that have no history and no way of tracking them.

I'd be very wary of buying a "low mileage" basic spec D reg car that wasn't previously privately owned.

It always has been easy though, its not illegal either but selling on a car and delibrately hiding the correct mileage is. They should record mileage and give it stamped on the NCT and DOE certs. I think this would stop alot of the fraud.

Both NCT and MOT carry the mileage at the time of test, correlate with these and don't buy without ;-)

    They already do this.

Yeah but it's very easy throw out the old one and they keep no record of it.

Test drove a savage 2007 Audi 2.0 Diesel , 124KM, timing belt done at 90KM. Really solid to drive, tiptronic. No service history, said it was lost......I spotted a mark for lease company, in old plates in boot, rang the company today, and there was 250000Km on it when they sold it in April....he put it through the NCT after he clocked it...i couldnt believe how the Audi wasnt smart enough to stop being clocked!!!..

That's it, it's shockingly easy and there's alot of people making alot of money out of it. Another thing to look out for would be very fresh tip ex where the timing belt was done.

Google 0894332827 and you'll see that they may have sold the following on donedeal.ie:

    a 2002 Peugeot 607
    a 2001 Nissan Almera
a 2001 Suburu [sic] WRX TURBO

All ads have been removed since by the advertiser. Sadly not cached by google.

5 different ads came up for me, but this was in one of them "ther in perfect condition miles are bit hi but car is perfect and well worth viewing " so unless it was very high previously I can't imagine them clocking. Lots of diesels coming up though.

OK I have my DOE cert it front of me here and the information on it is registration number, my name and address, testers signature, date of test, type of vehicle, weight laiden - unlaiden, chassie number, and finally the testers number. So where do I find out about the mileage then?

    NCTS do it.

    :pac:

I never expanded 'Show more results from donedeal.ie'

I'm not sure they bought the correction tool for sh1ts and giggles, but maybe they specialise in getting blown out cars back on the road.

This was even better, a long strip with it printed on it, very professional!!!!

Will the Nct give out info over the phone about mileage records on previous Nct dates? Ncts prior to me owning the car?

I've seen mileage correction being done before on a car which had an ecu replacement, plug the tool in and press a button, magic!

If you use VAG COM to read the internal mileage memory, it might have shown up the true mileage as some of the clockers cannot alter this.

    AFAIK no, they don't.

In my old Golf I put in a different set of clocks, drove it 15,000 miles and when I was selling it I put the old ones back in, took literally 2 seconds to code them back to their current mileage.

Ive heard of a passat that was clocked that was D reg, had 100000 kms on it, but had 180 on it prior, was def not low spec and was privately owned. The wear would not have been apparant on it. I would be wary of buying any diesel car that didnt have a comprehensive service history. Anything with a diesel up front is high milage fodder, otherwise why drive a diesel?

I didn't say that private cars couldn't be clocked, I was just saying there's a very high chance of a ex lease car (mostly D's) being clocked...
