Found one of these for sale in the local paper, Im saving up for a diesel golf at the mo and love the mk2 shape and the tax and insurance on a 1.6 will be cheaper than a 1.9 mk3 or mk4. Any mk2 GTD ive come across has been well over budget ( budget would be 1000-1500).

Did some internet research and its a mixed bag, some say it does 40mpg others say 60mpg. Has the same hp as my old micra so its going to be painfully slow . Car will be used as a daily also so ill be doing a fair few miles in it.

Does anybody on here swear by them or am I better off saving up and waiting for a mk3 tdi. The one in question in looking at is in galway and its a 1991 4dr, its tested till feb next year, rang the fella but no answer, will try again this evening.

Have a '87 myself. Daily driver to college, about 30 miles. It definitely would do 60+ miles to the gallon and is the best car I have seen on fuel. There's good poke out of it too. Never gives trouble and very reliable so I would agree with you on purchasing in one if you like the car. :)

Get the mk2. it's far slower than a mk3 tdi but cheaper tax, probably cheaper insurance and a better looking car. The non turbo is VERY slow and very noisy but they will certainly do great mpgs, plus you can relatively easily change to a td/tdi engine later. Very easy to fix/look after too

The straight diesel if running properly does 0-50 in 11.5 secs which is not too bad its just that it takes another 6secs to get to 62.5mp:D Personally I love the noise off them and am on my 6th straight diesel mk2 golf at the moment, this one is a keeper as I always say!

Haha I love talking about mk2 golfs on the motors forum as most people don't care about them, I will always love them. They are one of the best made cars of all time and that is a fact, take one a part and it makes you realise that these golfs were made before accountants ran motor companies.
    Adios!

I think they're grand old things, dead solid and a simple, reliable engine but people used to modern more refined tdi powered stuff (soft people) would get quite a shock at how slow and noisy they are compared to modern stuff but i still think they're great (prefer jetta mk2 though) and don't mind the slowness.

Saw a mk2 Golf earlier for the first time in ages and god do they still look good compared to some modern cars IMO. I was looking at it while stuck in traffic. I definitly gave it more attention then the horrid 11 reg 520D in front of it.

well i know plenty of people who'd get into any basic car designed in the 80s or before and subsequently freak out, possibly refusing to drive it due to not being helped along by all manner of modern comforts
