Donegal vs Derry - Ulster Final 2011

so its all change in ulster, for the first time since 1998 both armagh and tyrone have failed to make it to the big day, the last ulster final to take place between these two was in 1998, a match famous for joe brollys late goal and his "blowing kisses" to the crowd celebration

eoin bradley out rest of the year for derry, thats a massive massive loss, he was superb against armagh in the semi-final, defensively donegal are up there with the best in the country atm, they have lacey, mcgee and cassidy playing great football, up front murphy has been far from his best so far, only 0-06 in the 3 games (albeit one of those games he was sent off)

going to go for donegal win, i think their backs won't give derry near the room armagh backs afforded them and i expect murphy to announce himself on the 2011 championship in style come sunday

    Agree with you.
I think Bradley is just too big a loss for Derry. He'd have had the ability to cause alot of problems for the Donegal defence, but without him to focus on, I think they should be able to handle the Derry attack

Looking forward to it. A bit crap for the losing team to have to recover and play again in 6 days, or maybe that can be a good thing depending on the team and the manner of their defeat

The loss of Bradley isn't as bad as everyone's hyping it up to be, Derry have loads of options in the forwards, it'll be a much closer encounter than everyone's expecting.

Im hoping for our sake we can keep our heads and keep 15 men on the pitch for a change. I fully expect Murphy, Mc Faddden and Molloy to star (Should he get the nod over McBrearty) it just depends on how Derrys defense handles them (Their defense isn't far off ours)

Looking forward to heading down to Clones for this one, would be great to pull one over on our local rivals in an Ulster final :p

Bradley has always been inconsistent but was in great form prior to this.

I thought Derry would win, and they do still have other good forwards but they've lost their two most talented players and main scoring threats before this....and that's a big blow for any team. If Kerry lost Gooch and Donaghy, if Dublin lost the Brogans, if Cork lost Goulding and Sheehan...they'd all be in trouble so I don't see how it's different for Derry.

Donegal look to be able to grind out results...I don't much like their style of play but I think they'll win.

Hope Derry win this one for the sake of football.Would hate to see Donegal rewarded for playing puke football with an Ulster Title.

Hard to call Bradley a big loss for Derry, but the way they have been playing I still wudnt rule them out.

The loss of Eoin Bradley is a big blow to Derry's hopes. Donegal are probably one of the dourest teams in the land yet I'm sure their not too worried about their ugly style of football once they capture the Ulster title!

I'll go for Donegal to recapture the Ulster championship after 19 years with a 2 point victory over Derry in a low scoring contest.

Well normally Donegal teams are sympathised with as too open and naive in Ulster so I think we'll take it if it means an Ulster title.

It's a very hard one to call, Bradley out is a loss but as has been said Derry have plenty of scoring forwards to get by. I'd say it'll be a dour game to watch like the Tyrone match with Donegal getting a couple of goals to clinch it. 2-8 to 0-11.

If you're in Ireland, TV3 player should work.

Not sure if BBC Norn Iron have it on Iplayer.

If all else fails, www.justin.tv/the_city_end usually shows all the games.

Hey thanks, I don't really like the TV3 coverage which is why I was hoping there might be an online BBC option. If not I will suffer along as earlier although hopefully a better game than the Connacht final!

If it's on a BeeB channel it's usually available through iPlayer, whether you have access to iPlayer is another question :)

I think there's a Regional section of it, check under there and you should find the NI feed, either that or it might be under the Red Button options

Does anybody know who is doing the commentary on tv3 with senan connell? think they picked the most boring voice to do it. best of luck to both teams. would like Derry to win it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,100 ✭✭✭Browney7

Donegal to shade it in a very close dour defensive game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

That's Seán Walsh - usually commentates on the hurling on TV3. He also commentates on Galway Bay FM radio for Galway's hurling matches. I don't think I have ever heard him do a football match before.

he makes jimmy magee seem like a good commentator!

Derry had a chance of a goal there if the forward had passed the ball earlier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,100 ✭✭✭Browney7

I could kill Murphy. Had money on Donegal to be ahead at half time and he missed that free.:mad:

Penalty for Donegal and its scored by Murphy.

I see TV3 have Martin King refereeing the match. He seems to do everything at TV3 but you'd think they'd at least give him the weekend off once in a while. :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27 millhouse11

terrible stuff ulster football is gone to the dogs, what are kildare going to do to derry? they will definately cover the handicap whatever it is, kildare to win by 10 points +,

the fact there was only 3 minutes extra time for this game is a complete joke. What the hell is that all about? There was at least three minutes taken up by that halfwit of a referee when he awarded that penalty, another 3 injuries at least where play was stopped for minutes on end. Are the GAA being dictated to by the schedulers at tv stations or something? Or are referees REALLY THAT imcompetent and awful at pressing stop and start on a stopwatch? Muppets.... how do you get this stuff wrong unless you're intentionally screwing it up, or your IQ is sub forest gump levels?

The GAA are so stupid with regards to so many things. Overaged umpires with dodgy eyesight being another one from the game earlier.

3 minutes extra time...., yeah, well done GAA officials in clones today- incompetent clowns, you failed at your job.

Fair play to Donegal, there'll be some pints drank tonight!

Well done Donegal,a deserving triumph for them after previous years of heartbreak. Watched the game on BBC and I thought the commentary team slanted a bit too much towards Derry. All the same it was a pleasure to watch the game without the agony of listening to Brolly!

awful game both should have been down to 14 in that brawl

Mad that this is Donegal's first Ulster title since 1992...

I am so proud to be form Donegal and a supporter of the GAA :D

19 years since the last Ulster Tittle, it was immense to be in Clones today to witness the win...

Jim & every single player did the whole county proud. They worked as a team and deserved the win.

    Sam for the Hills :D:D:D:D:D:D

For far too long we lost Ulster Finals to teams that were cuter or more cynical, sure we lost an AI SF to Armagh in 2003 for exactly the same reasons. We got all the plaudits and praise from the Sunday Game and the Press while the others won All Ireland's or Ulster Titles.

Meh, we are Ulster Champions, beat Tyrone and it's always sweet beating Derry.

The last 15 mins when Donegal got going was good but before that it was a horrible match

    A deserved win for Donegal.
Not a pretty match to watch, but why should the winning team care.

Terrible sportsmanship by John Brennan. It was a blatant penalty, his keeper came rushing out, didn't get the ball and took the legs of the attacker. Penalty every time.

He should focus on the way his defense failed to track Michael Murphy, and the rush of blood to Delvin's head, rather than trying to blame the ref for his own teams failures.

Reminded me of Wenger's idiotic comments after the Arsenal V Liverpool match when Eboué barged into Lucas to concede a late penalty. Do these managers believe the words coming out of their mouths, or is it an attempt to try and deflect blame from themselves and their players?

Just wanted to add my own congratulations to any Donegal lads here. Donegal were definitely due one. I thought they were the better team last Sunday and completely bottled up the Derry attack - which I suspect they would have done anyway, even if the two Bradleys had been playing. Skinner Bradley had a great game in the sem-final against us, but that was primarily down to our tactical ineptitude rather than any great play by Derry, in my opinion.

I hope Donegal go on and give the All Ireland a lash - they have been known in the past for maybe taking their eye off the ball after one or two good results (;)). I suspect though that they will fall when they meet serious opposition in the wider spaces of Croke Park.

As for Derry - I can't see them lasting beyond this week-end. Losing the Ulster Final will have been a crushing mental blow, and having to go to Croke Park to play one of the form teams, a mere six days later, is a huge ask.
