Job situation for Social Care Workers !

Love some advice/info from those who are currently looking for work as social care workers

I'm a 30 year old woman heading into my final year of a BA(hons) in Applied Social Studies in the WIT. I used to workin the Central Bank but following a 2 year stint of volunteering, most of it in the US with women coming out of prison , I decided to leave my Central bank job for a totally new direction - social care. I have a MBS from Smurfit and PG in stats from TCD.

I suppose I have been always on the periphery of it given that I came from a 'fostering' family and have always volunteered in various organisations.

I suppose I'm in a bit of a quandry - attended training with TTM yesterday and was a little despondant given that most of the other participants (7others) could only find locum work in the the residential setting.

I would hope that my age, expierence and previous qualifications may give me the edge.I've just been on activelink and there seems to be a good few jobs - from Focus, Respond and Crosscare - seriously is the job situation that bad ?

Its just if thats the case I would consider heading to the UK although a social worker based there has warned me that the rates of pay are worse there and the career is not as well regarded ! Love any advice.

Its not that bad if you have experience. Anyone I know who has left college in the last 2 years is having a hard time. It also depends what area you want to work in. If your looking at Focus, Crosscare training will be very important. You need to have Children's First, TCI, Occupational First Aid. These are a must to work in residential care with adolescents. I would also recommend ASSIST suicide intervention.

    Best of Luck:)

It isn's that bad once you have sufficient experience and have a bunch of up to date courses under your belt.
There is work here in the uK but paid less than Ireland..

yaylward, there is alot hiring espeically as relief and once you start up as relief you have your foot in the door and you can build up your experience!

Its also added bonus that you have your volunteering experience and it would be beneficial if you cant get work to try and build on that voulunteering experience just to try and build your skills as much as possible! You could also look at traning in areas such as addicition, community development espeically if your looking at working with vulnerable adults and youths.
    Best of luck
